Sup everyone,

So recently my tranny went bad on me after being replaced at 184k miles. Before starting the swap my car took me all the way to 231k miles when it finally broke down. So now I'm in the process of a 6 speed swap and thought I'd post some pics of my progress. I'll update as I go along but here's a bunch for starters. Figured I'd try and post pics and add to the few other 6 spd threads who have made threads already which have helped me a lot when deciding to tackle this myself. Also, hopefully it helps those who decide to try it in the future!

Thats all for now. I've got a few videos too but the old motor is basically pulled out I just have to remove the auto shifter cables from the firewall and then take out my old cluster and put in the new motor and tranny and rewire everything. I've got a lot of questions too so I'll post more as I go deeper into putting it back together.

Nice. You beat me to making a swap thread. I'm in the process of doing my swap but I'm keeping my -p motor. So far I've got just the interior gutted and the handbrake installed and adjusted. Holes for the clutch pedal ready as well. I just got delayed a few days ago with the work though because of life stuff but I will be working on it every weekend from here on out hopefully. This weekend I plan to pull the motor. If I can help with anything I'll try, seeing as how we're at similar stages. I'm attempting everything myself in my garage at my parents house so I'm sure I'll find myself asking some questions.

Nice! Sounds like youre making good progress too man. I feel you though ive been delayed too sometimes life just gets in the way. But yea definitely for me right now i just dont know how to remove the old shifter cables from the firewall but im probably making it tougher than it really is. After i get rid of those the motor should come right out.

Thanks guys yea ive had a lot of helping hands along the way but for the most part me and my friend have been putting in the work on everything. Its my first time ever doing anything like this and i think i made pretty good timing for the first few days i worked on it. Got the motor basically out and interior all gutted in 3 days time. Then i havent worked on it since cause ive been busy.

Alright, so got some more work done today and yesterday. Pulled out the old ebrake and cables and also took out the cluster to get ready to swap the new one in. All thats basically left is to remove the old motor mounts and wait for the new motor and tranny and 6 spd parts to get here then swap em in. Heres some pics of my progress.

Old ebrake and cable out. This was a pain in the ass because the fuse box and wiring were in the way of one bolt towards the top near the steering column. Had to unplug a bunch of shit just to get my ratchet to reach up there and have enough room to loosen it. Finally came out after like half an hour when I found the right extension to give me enough clearance.

Oh also one more thing I forgot to add. I'm planning on cleaning and washing out the dirty ass engine bay and washing everything down so it looks new and clean and debating on a wire tuck? It would definitely be fun and look even better when I pop the hood and probably would be easier since the motors already out. So yea thats probably gonna happen too.

^ that would make for some very awkward clutch placement. there is a specific spot that needs to be drilled in order to bolt the clutch pedal in. its essentially the same spot as in the CL.

You know you cannot used the auto rear mount an you will need removed weight damper thingy to right of it. After you remove weight damper it going make easier to run cable link throw it. Also why didn't you remove J piped all the way? You know make it easier to reinstall engine.

Since your using 99 TL are you running Richvie module or swap out all the wire?
B/c J32A2 engine don't have the same speed sensor an temperature plug. These are things i ran into when i did my swap.. (easy fix)

Yea Im well aware that the rear motor mount is different from the manual one. Just havent removed the motor mounts yet but I'm getting new ones from the CLS 6spd so no problems there. And I'm not all the way done with everything yet like the J pipe I've been just doing a few things at a time for now because the new parts arent here yet.

Also, I'm not using my TLP motor so no need for the richie module since I'm swapping out all the wiring from the auto to manual harness from the 6 spd CLS motor. But thanks for the tips bro! Did lots of research before I started this so I'd run into as little problems as possible once I started!

This. I posted a specific picture of where the clutch pedal is going in my pics up above. Like 03tls said it would be an awkward place if i put the clutch where the old ebrake was lol.

And Sway Ive got all the parts I need for the 6spd swap (motor, tranny, 6 spd parts) their getting shipped out to me from NJ so once they get here I'll be set to go and just swap everything in

Was that from a honda/acura salvage yard that had around 115k miles on it? Lol i was looking at one complete swap from NJ a month ago so I'm just curious. And the way I removed that e-brake mount was by grinding away the bottom portion with a dremel and then just bent the piece back and forth until the metal fatigued and broke off. Hope that helps you out if you have troubles cutting it off.

Yea I got the ebrake mount off already. Made enough space in there to unscrew it. And the parts I got were actually from a member on here not from a salvage yard.

Are there any threads around here pertaining to just installing a 6-speed in a car that's already a Type-S? A lot of these threads seem to be overkill for people like me who already have the Type-S and I imagine things may be slightly different (and easier) for us aside from the fact that we aren't installing an engine.

I don't think there's any threads for those who have done it in an already type s motor. However, I don't think it'll be as much work if you already have the type s because since you already have the motor all you need do is take out the old tranny and then use the 6 spd parts to convert the motor and complete the rest. However, I think taking out the entire motor makes it a whole lot easier to work around everything else in the area such as the tranny and all that wiring since everything is out the way. And I don't know if you've looked through any of the 6 spd threads already but if you already have the type s motor then you need a few extra parts for the motor since the motors an automatic in order to make it manual.

Even swapping just the trans is almost as much work. Keeping you're original engine doesn't make much difference in the process. And I'm not sure if it'd be much easier to do everything while keeping the engine in still. I'm swapping only the trans out but I still will be pulling the motor.

Got some more work done on the car today. Took out all the motor mounts and removed the engine wiring harness from the firewall and the ECU while I was at it.

Just had a question. Since I removed the weight damper next to the rear mount am I going to have to put it back once I put in the new mounts or will the clutch lines get in the way when I go to install them?

there would be NO difference or any easier. Sure you can do the swap without removing the motor BUT its much easier to do everything with the motor pulled out. Removing the motor and trans takes all of 2-3 hours. It takes just as much time to remove just the trans. Then you have to work around the motor to do everything that is needed and you waste more time. Having the type-s motor already only means you dont have to buy it. BUT you have to use the richie module.

Got pretty much all the rest of the work done today that I needed to. I wanted to finish prepping up the car before the motor comes in tomorrow so that way its ready to go right in! Heres just a few pics. Took out the firewall spot weld bracket and drilled the holes for the new ebrake near the center console.



Taking out this bracket was a pain in the ass! I used a drill, flathead and a hammer to get it out after like 3 hours total. Lots of drilling, prying, pulling, yanking, cussing, bleeding and sweating. Finally got that thing out though!

Didnt get any pics of the 2 holes i drilled for the ebrake cables but its pretty self explanatory.

Also, I pretty much finished drilling out the spot welds through the firewall in order to mount the clutch pedal I just didnt take any pics of it. Got too tired and excited once I finally removed that damn bracket. Motor will be in tomorrow and then the real progress will begin!
