Muffler Replacement Recommendations

Hi TLer's

I have a 99TL with around 100K on it and I need to replace both mufflers. I don't want anything performance, but a cheaper stainless steel alternative to the $230 ea. OEM's.

I've looked at Magnaflow and they have universal fit units but they do not have fitted replacements listed for the TL. I suspect it's because of the custom bent inlet pipes and hangers that are not included and will need to be added by a shop.

Does anyone have any suggestions/advice (part no's ?) for either Manaflow or other suggestions for muffler replacements ?

Thanks to all who reply !!!

smarty.

Just curious, how did the OEM mufflers fail? Mine are 13 years old and I haven't rotted a hole yet - '99 was staineless too, correct?

You could buy a set of Tsudo axle backs for 279 shipped. They look really good, it's worth it. I still have my oem mufflers in good shape. I could clean them up and take some pics if oem is what you'd like to have. Let me know if you'd like them.

Actually, the CAT, all three flanges and one muffler completely rusted out. The other muffler has pin holes in it.

I assume all of these parts were stainless steel but they failed anyway. Who knows why ?

Canada sees lots of harsh winter. I see the same crap here. I just make sure to get washes all the time to keep the salt off. Just $7 robot touchfree wash w underbody flush.

Yeah, the flanged connections seem to be the weak spot which is first to go, then the seams or joints get stressed. I gotta say 13 years is pretty good for an exhaust system exposed to the elements, even though it's supposedly stainless.

You may wanna check with Rockauto or Partsgeek for aftermarket mufflers. There's a brand called "Bosal" that makes an actual replacement for the TL. "Walker" does also, but they are more expensive than the "Bosal". To prevent internal moisture, drill a small 1/8" hole near the lowest part of the muffler's bottom joint seam.

If I could get it to Canada for a decent price, I would. I can't see spending $2K on an exhaust that would last another 10 years makes no sense.

Sad but it is the reality.

Looks like I have a similar problem. Heard a small exhaust leak this morning and think it is coming from the gasket between the muffler and mid pipe on the drivers side. I am a little concerned about trying to take it apart and replace it since the flanges are so rusted and it will most likely turn into a project to replace.

Milwaukee Dave - How much louder are the Tsudo's than the stock?

If you just take the stock mufflers off and install the Tsudos the sound will not greatly increase at all. Really only under WOT. For the price it's worth it honestly because they look better than stock.

Also, does anyone know the inlet pipe size for a "99" ?
