Modded door panels to fit new speakers...

Well fellas, I've had a brand new set of Infiniti Kappa series speakers for 2 months now and I finally went to install today.
However I ran into a slight fitment issue. I had Kicker speakers in the doors and they use the plastic mount/guard I believe thats OEM (#1 in the first diagram link below). I took that out and the new speakers are too deep and hit the window so I reused those and used 2 spacers that the new speakers came with between the new speaker and the bracket to account for the space between the two. Now the speaker does not clear the door panel.

I already took a dremel and ground the tall plastic speaker surround on the rear of the door panel down flat as low as it will go. I am almost to the point of clearance but the only thing left to grind or remove is the plastic behind the door panel speaker cloth. I would remove the plastic honeycomb, not the cloth

I was wondering if anybody has needed to do this before to get speakers to fit, or what other method has been done to get them to fit...I searched to no avail, only someone who mounted a speaker to the cabin side of door panel.

Also, the chrome piece on the top of door panel that meets the window (# 11 in the second diagram link) is misaligned due to the door panel ripped in multiple spots where it hooks in. Has anybody had to deal with that before? I was thinking to remove that silver piece and fold all the hooks in and use tapping screws to connect to the panel.

You can actually use a 1” thick spacer behind your speaker to move it into the door grille without problems. This will allow you a total safe speaker depth of 3.5”. This is actually plenty for door speakers. So I’m sure you have plenty of room to play with. Is your speaker deeper than 3.5" from behind the mounting contact surface?

I installed mine last summer. I made a custom spacer by stacking together two 0.5” spacers. I had no problems in fitment. You may be having an alignment issue where the speaker is hitting the edge of the grille.

According to the spec sheet there is 2 diff specs for depth, the larger being 3 1/8", the smaller being 2 5/16", depending on where you measure from.

You can easily confirm this yourself. When you have the door panel off and the window down, measure from the back of the metal panel to the window. Whatever that measurement is, subtract 0.25" for safety margin. Now add an inch to that to get the total depth of speaker when using a 1" spacer. I got 3.5" with my door panels.

Here's what one guy did with his TL:

And check out the stealth mounting of the tweeters inside the grill. That's what I did and my 6.5" speaker fit perfectly in the grille alongside the tweeter.
