Long trip/move to WV with 152k.

After spending my whole life in FL I am moving to Charleston WV. My car will be 10 years old on Jan 22nd Since I am moving to a WV is there any special treatment I should do so the car can last me another 5 years.

First thing is the road trip will be 12 to 14 hours long, I have never taken such a long trip at once. Any tips?

I hear that the salt will eat the car up, How often should I hose down the undercarriage of the car then?

What sucks even more is I wont have a garage to work on the car

seafoam the tank before trip for best mileage
Otherwise its normal ck of all fluids, change brake fluid and ps if you want, while you can.

Paint the brake calipers and rotor edges where they rust now--or it will be bad there
Painted they stand up to the elements

set tire pressures close to or at max COLD pressure on sidewall of tire
as you will be carrying weight for several hour stretch and high speeds = extra heat, the stiffer sidewall from added pressure when cold will compensate

12 hours is nothing on a TL,,there are ziners who cross country with another driver, non stop, gas and go stops...the TL likes to stretch its legs...set it on cruise and enjoy some tunes.

bring a large mouth sports drink plastic bottle-rinsed!
sometime rest stops are few and far between, stay hydrated-drink lots of WATER and have a HERE bottle
Human Element Range Extender,,, as used by pilots~

gentle water rinse off of the underbody after severe salting from road snow/ice crews.
NOT high pressure spray, that drives crud into hiding spots--gently rinse off like a boat

stop and get out of the car every 2 hours max- 1 hour is better for your back and body- get out walk around a few minutes to get blood flowing in legs (you have heard of airline passengers having severe health/heart problems from sitting for hours)
Lay down on a picnic table- stretch out-
rest your eyes!!
When you get back on the road you will be refreshed and alert
thats important since most other drivers are not paying attention!

What oil should I be using in the cold month of WV. I am sure it drops below zero in the mountains.

5-20 if it stays cold all day
5-30 otherwise just like normal

or go extreme protection with something synthetic like redline 0-20
that will immedialty flow at minus more degrees than you are willing to go outside in!
the first number of oil is the flowabilty/viscosity at 32F,,W = Winter!!
the 20 or 30 is measured at 200-220f =normal oil operating temp

you wont hurt anything using the zero-20 and will do the most you can for taking care of your baby

perform a good detail=, claybar, cleaning/polishing compounds to remove swirls and a few coats of `synthetic` car wax- it will hold up better against the elements

dont forget the wheels in the clean... polishing and waxing--that will help them
I use 3 coats synthetic everywhere on the enkeis and the paint looks awesome

if you have the brakes off to paint those parts, wax the backing plate- thats where crud will build up and there is already grime there to attach to

relube all brake parts with caliper grease so they slide easily--again use synthetic for the temps
