Long Time Lurker--NEED ADVICE!
Hey guys, my name is Rene and I'm from Houston, TX. FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS (since I was 16), I have been yearning and admiring the Second-Gen TL. Unfortunately, I've never been able to afford one until now.
Well, here's my situation: I recently (3 days ago) purchased a 99' TL-P, with 107k on the clock. Now, being an enthusiast, I jumped on the deal and purchased it from the original owner.
-With that being said, the transmission is starting to give me problems. It runs JUST FINE for about 20 mins, or 20-30 mile hike, but once I'm in stop-and-go traffic, it starts shifting harsh. Today, it chirped (wheel hop) into 2nd gear with my foot barely on the gas.
Unfortunately, it's gonna go....it's inevitable. The original owner told me he had the tranny replaced at 55k, and has been on this one since then.
I would like to know how I should go about getting this sucker replaced, seeing that some members have had it done for free up to 140k. I've owned 3 Honda's my entire young life, and would hate to have the company reject me and put me in a dangerous situation just because of 7000 miles.
Any advice is appreciated,
-Rene M.

Also, another request I had from you guys is this:
I would like to compile a list of members who have had their trannys replaced OVER 100k miles.
I feel that I can possibly use this as ammunition supporting my request for a replacement. Honestly, I'm not a greedy person, I mean, I would even offer to pay labor, but I would prefer to obtain a free "good will" replacement just like some other members.
If you would, Please state your name and dealership where you had your tranny replaced after 100k.
Thanks again guys,
-Rene M.
Edit: OMG, hahah, I just realized that I registered here is 2003!! heheh, see, i've been wanting a TL forever, but now it's causing me a headache!

I don't konw if the 99 TL were included in the Tranny Recall they had....I know the 02 and 03 were. Does it matter when you do the "recall" service? Can you still get it after your warrenty is out since it's a recall?

I suggest people register at the Owner's Link at acura.com. It lists all the recalls that both apply to your car and were done to your car. It also prevents the spread of incorrect information.

hey spoon,
If i were you i wont bother getting the tranny fixed. I would call the person i bought it from and demand my money back. I am not sure if you state offers any lemon laws. but a lot of states do. The seller should ve told you about the tranny problem before selling you the car.
But depending on the sale terms! it the sale was "AS IS" and warranty then you are OOL...
call the seller...
good luck

yo good luck, you MIGHT have some luck with the dealerships down here, I heard they not as bad as all these other ones around the nation.
They should cover it if not give you a discount or something, I'd go with that or rebuild it if u really like ur car.

Just took the TL to one of my local Acura dealers. I have spoken to a Acura Client Servies Rep. on the phone, and they gave me a case # and everything after i "plead my case".
Tomorrow I'm waiting for a word from the service guy to find out if the Case Manager has approved my situation. If they do deny it, I will still call and contact the Case Manager to further explain....WISH ME GOOD LUCK!!!

Who's your service dude? I've pretty good experiences with the guys at John Eagle (Eric Younger and Someone Dillard). Actually that Dillard guy (I think his name was Ron) was really awesome.
I don't remember anyone from Sterling McCall. That's where I bought my 2000 TL-P, but for service it's too far for me.
No experience with Gillman or Charlie Thomas/Champion.
I'm on the NW side too, and I actually take it to John Eagle Honda at 290 and West for non-Acura specific issues. They're pretty good over there.
Best service I ever got was at Russell and Smith Honda, but again, usually too far for me.

OMG I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!!!
I just got off the phone with Joe Gonzales, the service rep, and here's how the conversation went...
Joe "Hey Rene, I'm not too sure how to tell you this..."
me "ummm, what's going on Joe" (shuddering, i KNEW it was gonna be a denial of good-will)
Joe " 100%"
me "huh? 100%?"
Joe "yep, 100%"
me "umm, what exactly do you mean Joe?"
Joe "Acura is going to cover your parts/labor 100%"
me " WOW! You really made my day sir"
I am VERY satisfied with the good-willed representatives and agents from Acura. This particular situation truely showed their "true colors". I will be in the market for a new car within a year and a half, and they will definitely be on the top of my list!

Just FYI... in California, buying a used car from a private party is non-refundable. There is no warranty implied, unless clearly stated in a contract.
