Wasn't sure where else to put this so...

Jan 2016 my TL threw the dreaded P0740 code again, a little over 4 years after it had been rebuilt.
During the meantime it sat and I drove a different car while I collected AV6 trans parts.
Today I picked it up from the mechanic and good Lord did I miss her.
My mechanic of over 20 years seemed a little nervous and too swamped to handle it so he suggested I take it to a guy nearby. So I did..
Armed with the AV6 swap printout (thank you AZ) I told the guy my situation while he looked it over. Not only did he not seem scared of it, he seemed rather happy to do it.
He was also very familiar with our cars and the transmission issues they have.
$1175 was the total. This was labor to put in the used AV6 trans I supplied, replace some motor mounts, supply the trans mounts, and provide the torque converter for the AV6.
My other mechanic? Well when the trans blew up years ago all he did was pull it and send it to his rebuild guys, then re-install it....$1500
And no I have no relationship to the place other than as a so far happy customer.

Thank you. I can see what everyone means about slightly increased steering effort while parking etc. Hell, I'm just happy to have it back. It's been so long it feels like I am driving someone else's car.
Wonder if it can handle a turbo now?

Since I had a Type-S mine didn´t change the steering input.
How do you feel the shift behavior and TC lock up? Mine has a strong kick when the TC Locks Up at 5th gear in full Auto.
Also can you feel a difference in acceleration? Some members and me noticed that the TC in the AV6 is more efficient and makes up for some lost HP increasing Acceleration and slightly MPGs.

Turbo? As long as It can handle a 3.7L Build I am happy.

I have not had a chance to run it thru the gears since the transmission place was nearby. Also it is parked until the weekend as I'd like to change the fluids first before enjoying it again. After I do both I will come back to give my opinion.
For anyone reading this, the rebuilt trans made it about 40k miles before dying again. Waste of time and money.

From what I've gathered, the rebuilds last between 30k - 50k miles and the remans last ~100k (if you're lucky).

Wish I could have had the money to put an AV6 in my TL when the trans failed in 2015...

That 40k miles cost me 4k. Weeee.
I was lucky I had a spare car and some time to save up the money.

BTW, I noticed he put Dexron 6 in the tranny. I am replacing it this weekend and no I am not driving it until I do.
Yes I have heard it is good stuff and I still don't care. Even If I have to pay a hooker $100 to suck it all out to be safe, I will.

I wonder why Trans shops still push universal ATFs..
Honda transmissions are known to be finicky with ATF selection, Ask me.. My Synthetic Amsoil ATF Change cost me a Transmission.

The funny thing is he charged $9.99 a quart for the GM stuff. Honda gave me a discount and with tax I paid about $80 for 9 quarts.

Oh and seeing TLs on Craig's list for 1k or less with blown trannys makes me want to buy one, install an AV6 tranny, and then drive the piss out of it. These are underrated cars at least as far as the engines go. Fix the transmission issue and they kick butt ROI wise. Untapped potential.

For real! I saw a TL Type S in SD for around 300 bucks with a bad trans.. Throw in an AV6 and DAMNNN You have a pretty decent fast sedan.

I just saw a TL-P for $650 and thought that was pretty good. No joke, but for $300 I would probably jump on it.

For 300 though I don´t think a Bad Transmission is its only problem

One of the joys of being able to do much of your own work on a car is that you can buy low and sell high if you need to. Unless it has frame damage, I could probably make it work.
I am F'd on electrical stuff, tho.
Tomorrow I change out the trans fluid, oil, and then stretch her legs out. Soooo looking forward to it.

Ok, did the 3x3 today and here is what I observed.
5th gear also lets me know when it gets there. 1st feels taller than I recall.
Overall it definitely shifts more quickly and it does seem to be a little faster acceleration wise.

Thanks. She still needs more TLC but she will get it over the next few months.

Nice, have you noticed it being an obvious change in effort with the steering? I need to do more research but I cant remember if you lose power steering totally or if its just more stiff.

You do not lose power steering. It does stiffen it up, even while driving. Where it is most noticeable is when you pull into or out of a parking space. Then it feels like you have only half the help of power steering.
