Just got the P740 error and trans is slipping badly. Do I have ANY hope? Just got alternator, front passenger ball joint, and front motor mount replaced. Any chance the mechanic may have inadvertently knocked something loose fixing the above issues. I just read all the P740 threads and its not looking, right. Car has 330,000 and was running great before the alternator failed last Thursday. Tranny was replaced from Acura at about 125,000 miles....did the 3x3 about 50,000 miles ago. Please be kind, bracing for the worst, car at mechanic now.

I will bet my MDX, TL, House, My Wife bimmer, All my Belongings, My dog and my cat that the Trans is dead...
P0740 is a sign of god for us in the 2G TL... A sign to get the AV6 and never rebuild the POS B7WA (Original Trans code name) again.

Ok, Mechanic found that the ground strap was connected to the chassis with like 3 strands and was badly corroded. Replaced it and no longer getting P740 code. Still going to do the 3 X 3 and change the tranny filter. Remember the alternator was just changed from original. Is there any possible way that the changes in the electrical circuit caused the solenoids to throw bad info?

Just to clarify your transmission is already slipping so its guaranteed to be dead... The trans under no circumstances should slip, even if its malfunctioning (erratic shifts, etc.) that + the P0740 is a sure sign that the trans is on its way out. Your mechanic probably reset the the ECU which will remove the code until the TC has to lock again under 4th or 5th gear, Once it tries again and fails because the solenoid is clogged it will throw the P0740 again.

Thanks to everyone who responded. This could not have happened at a worst time. Just spent $$$ on the new alt, engine mount, towing, ground strap, transmission fluid, labor, ball joints, struts, etc and now this happens. Wow. Love the car but i'm struggling on getting the AV6 tranny or a new car, especially with no car to look for another car. Anyone know a shop in Delaware thats know for the AV6 swap. I called like 5 so far and no one seems to know anything about it. #screwed

Last question on this. If I do the 3x3, will I get ANY extra time to drive to look 4 a new car or is the fact that I had to get it towed to the shop an indication that it is kaput? Thanks again fellas. Damn.

My transmission went completely haywire @ around 170K miles, bad bucking shifting, threw a bunch of codes, the whole 9 yards. I turned around and barely made it back to my house. I did a drain and fill and drove around the neighborhood, barely made a difference. I did another drain and fill and drove around and it was better, ended up doing about three or four more each a week apart (fluid was *really* dirty and dark), pulled all the solenoids and cleaned the screens, changed the filter, and it worked alright until it went out for good @ 208K and I got stranded. But I kinda knew that was coming, I got the P0740 code on a Monday, seemed to work fine but broke down on Friday. It would not engage any gear at all. I did not want to drain & fill and pray again so decided to fix for good.

You seem to be looking for an easy or temp fix. There isn't. Your tranny is on its deathbed, and you're going to have to bite the bullet of a new tranny or new car. Please don't consider rebuilding the tranny though.
Will a 3x3 extend the life a little bit? Probably not but even if it did, you might get stranded at any moment. Not worth it imo.

Yeah like most people already said, Do not be letdown because of this! I know its a hurdle and this might wanna make you just move on from the car but STOP!! Apart from the transmission the TL is one of the best reliable cars out there! Its not slow and gets good MPGs for a V6! What you need to is replace the stupid god awful OEM Trans.
You got probably 2 choices:
1.- Part the car
2.- Get the AV6
Under no circumstances rebuild the OEM Transmission again! its guaranteed to fail in a couple of years because the rebuild doesn´t fix the Design Problem that makes it go belly up. Also rebuilding is by far more expensive than the AV6 Swap Option!. Once you get the AV6 you got a helluva Car right there... The engine is bulletproof and the car combo itself has aged pretty well at least in my 230K using it.
Answering your last question about the 3x3, You could be lucky and get another week if so by doing the 3x3 but once the trans start popping the P0740 you are under the clock.. When mine died the first time it took 2 days once the trans would not engage drive, Granted I didn´t do a 3x3 but from all the threads around here it seems that sometimes it gets you a little more time and sometimes it doesn´t do anything by popular consensus do not waste your money on it.

Two years ago I was in the same boat. Dropped $1500 on work to get the car to pass inspection, only to have the transmission fail two weeks later. If I had the time and money, I would have gone the AV6 route, but unfortunately I was strapped for cash and had to sell the car to a crack head (no bullshit) for $400. IDK if the guy even had a license.
When the trans crapped out it had 220k miles on it and had no signs of slowing down. Granted, it was well maintained, but it ran and drove like it had like 30k miles on it.
Wish I could have had the money to fix it.

I've only been a member of this forum for a few months but long enough to know, any signs of transmission problems has lead to failure, 100% of the time. There's little ways to get a bit more life out of it sometimes but its just burning cash in your pocket. When you get slippage or trouble codes, start looking for a AV6 trans. Its the only real fix and its a direct bolt-on. Stop kidding yourself.

My transmission failed and I had it towed to the nearest Honda dealer, thinking I was going to write to Honda and ask for goodwill replacement. As most requests go for goodwill on a 15 year old car, Honda told me that they wouldn't be helping me fix it. I got a call a few days later from a tech at the dealership who was looking for a car for his brother. I drove down there in my "new" car and was ready to sell.
The guy looked homeless (not judging, just saying) and paid me $400 in all twenty dollar bills. Also had a white powdery substance all over his fingers. (No idea what that was, either) He asked me if he could sign his "girl's" name on the title. Since I had already notified the DMV that I no longer owned the car, I told him he can do what ever the hell he wants. Before I signed it over to him I was letting it warm up while I took the plates off. Before I even shook his hand he opened the door and got in it, I thought for sure he was going to try and drive away with it until I remembered the transmission was toast.
