Im looking at a used 1999 TL, any thing I should lookout for

Im looking at an excellent shape 99 TL, with 120,000miles..price is $6,000 USD (private sale)...I am having it inspected at the Acura dealer tomorrow, then if all goes well I hope to be the proud owner soon

Are there any major things I should look for, or be aware of? I am coming from a 96 Civic so this 3.2 is nice change to say the least...

The 3.2 is a solid engine right? I like to keep my cars for a long time, so Im looking at reliability here...is the TL a good deal?

Any comments before I get the car are appreciated!

i got the same exact car with the same color too. mine has just a bit over 110K but see if it already had its tranny replacement. i had to get mine done at 99,996. if the previous owner already had it swapped out then u should be fine. but if he hasnt then you might run into some problems down the road since the warrenty of the tranny is expired after 100,000

First of all welcome to the board! The TL looks good so far from the picture you gave, the engine for all the years are solid, and they can take high mileage. Transmission is your only worry, but the 99 TL have a slight less chance of the transmission breaking down compared to the 00-03. However, get a carfax and go to acura and register the VIN to see for any history. Good luck and welcome again!

See if it has had the tranny replaced before. If yes, get it.

Thank you for the replies, I didnt know about the transmission issue...

The TL in question has 193,000km/120,000 miles so would a transmission problem have surfaced by now ?

And if its an original transmission is that reason to NOT get the car ?

(Im reading this thread now: https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...t=transmission , but its 46 pages so it might take a while )

Yea, keep reading that, you'll find the answers to your questions. However, some of the orignal transmission on a 99 died at 150K or more, but like how's it been stated before, its like a ticking bomb waiting to go off. Get some facts and history of the car.

Okay I just finished the whole 46 pages and 1140 posts in the transmission thread...

...I think Im going to pass on this car (even though it looks great, drives superb, and is a great price) and will take a look at Maximas or some Lexus models...

I can not afford to buy this car then have a tranny problem in 2-3 months, Ive got bad luck like that...

Thank you all for the comments !

I guess you've fallen victim to the FUD here. Transmission problems are rare, 1%-2% of the TL's sold. The problem is seemingly magnified here because--surprise--this is a tech help forum. Oh well, you didn't buy the TL, it's your loss! It is your money, though, too.

Everyone on here blows the tranny problems up and makes all interested people think that the tranny will go out on them within a matter of days (or even months). I have a 99 and am still on the original tranny at 141K miles .

The decision is ultimately up to you and I think -- scratch that -- I KNOW that you will LOVE your TL if you end up changing your mind and pick one up.
