I have a 1999 Acura TL and today it cut off while I was

I have a 1999 Acura TL and today it cut off while I was driving it. It has 118000 miles on it. The radio immediately turned off, the gas pedal was unresponsive, and all the dash instruments and gauges fell flat. When I started the car, the ABS light and TCS lights came on and stayed on, and just before the car cut off, the key ignition light flashed. Also, the car sometimes doesn't start the first time I fire it up. The engine turns over, but it doesn't catch. It usually works the second time. Help! I don't want to be rolling down the interstate and have my car shut off on me! Thanks alot!

It could be ignition switch. I think it is recalled on 99. Hopefully yours is covered if it was ignition switch.

Sounds like the ignition switch or loose wires somewhere. If it ever happens again while driving, wiggle your keys and it can get it started again. Have you had the recall done on it yet? Either way, get it to the dealer and get it replaced. Actually, it might be easy enough to DIY.

Granted the TL transmissions are problematic but there's nothing to even sort of, maybe, a little bit suggest the transmission here. If it weren't for the fact that the transmissions are such a known weak point, you could just as easily guess that it's the car getting ready to split right down the middle and erupt into a giant flaming ball of death. Thanks for the dangerously wild stab though.

shampolo, ignition switch is indeed the prime suspect here.

A transmission problem wouldn't cause the dash gauges to all go out, the radio to quit and the entire electrical system to shut down.

I had the same thing happen on my 99. The dealership replaced the entire key ignition assembly. Then it happened again. This time 2 of my three coils were dead. They replaced the coils under warranty but I was responsible for the spark plugs that fouled when the coils died. That cost me, if I recall, $300 or more. So I drove across the parking lot, after paying the bill, and traded on an 02 TL-S. My warranty was up and I didn't want to be responsible for the inevitable tranny failure. So I just had my car appraised for trade and they offered me $9000. That leaves me with $6k in negative equity and I got my car for below private sale value and had a good finance situation. What the he|| happened to Acura value? My brother in law's same year Nissan Altima is worth almost that. Is it time to start crying?

As long as the ignition switch wasn't replaced previously under the recall, Acura will replace it at no cost. There is no time or mileage limit on recall items.

If it has been replaced already they probably won't cover it.

But the part can be found online for about $50 and you can replace it yourself.

My 1999 TL had very similar symptoms and the problem did turn out to be the ignition switch. Note that the first ignition switch was replaced under the recall and it was the replacement that failed. So even the replacements can fail.

Hey man, I agree with MikePA , try to help the guy..........not scare him ! Our tranny's may have their share of gremlins, but they don't have that much demonic power . Always try to be optimistic that it's possibly something simpler and less expensive than unloading the tranny on the poor guy .

I brought my 99TL in today to Fremont,Ca. The service advisor (Quan) has the ignition switch replaced and the car is Ok now. Original problem is the key turned on first click and second click nothing showed up in instrument panel. Also the car shut off itself ramdomly while driving. Thanks for no charged.

Prolly ignition, but I had a similar issue when i did a crappy wiring job for my footwell leds and piggybacked them on to a fuse it blew and killed all my instruments and my radio and incidentally my transmission switch..so don't rule anything out.
