hey all been a while since I posted. every time I come back to the site I am so amazed how great of a site this is...anyway to continue the overheating issue
wanted to bounce my situation off you all to basically tell me what I already think I know but need someone to tell me for sure.
1999TL 180000 miles
I got the TB/water pump, coolent flush done around 115000 miles so about 5 years ago. 1) The past couple summers when it is 105+ (like the past 20 dang days here!) my car will get hot at the stoplight with the AC on. when it goes past 1/2 I just turn the AC off and blow the regular fan and it will go back down - quickly when I start driving.
2) when I open the hood the driver side fan is NOT on, while the passenger side always is. when the engine is cool and running, neither fan is on until I turn the AC on then the passenger one is on.
so considering the age I assume
1) I need to put in a new radiator
2) replace the temp sensor maybe? sorry I have not diagnosed the driver fan for an electrical issue - is that easy to do? is spins freely when I spin by hand but wont fire up
I want to fix this ASAP because I am sick of the cat and mouse game ever day when I drive home to keep her from getting too hot...I have already replaced the thermostat and hoses in the past

Get that driver side fan running right and it will most likely fix your problem.

does the fan sensor work??
if the fan turns freely by hand its usually ok, did you jumper power to the fan power to test?
lets make sure you buy parts that will help
power and power when needed may not be the same

I'd say well over 70% of reports on here end up being the fan temp sensor-
located pass lower corner of rad on 00+ years, screws in
and near thermostat on 99

well I just assumed it was the fan because when I got home yesterday I kept the engine on and when I swapped the connectors on the top of the fans the drivers side connector turned the passenger fan on again. And I checked that both had full power at the connector. so that led me to believe that the temp sensor was working and telling the driver fan to turn on but it was not?

ok you win,
if power from driver fan operates pass fan,,but not its own fan
= dead fan

wanted to update - yes it was the fan. I got the new one yesterday from rockauto and it works perfectly. I put it in at 8:00 last night when it was still 104 outside here in the Dallas area...
I did notice how VERY dirty the back of the radiator was so I cleaned it out real good from the front and back and pulled the other fan out so I could clean behind that one. I also replaced the radiator cap that was all jacked up.
thanks again for everyones replys

so it was 2 part prob--bad rad cap wont pressurize the system
and bad fan wont pull air thru rad to remove that excess heat!

ya I have had this car for nearly 10 years so I feel like we "know" each other. So I was always good enough to keep it from getting too hot but this summer is so hot I could not do it anymore and just not a good situation if the wife ever had to drive it.
it is very random because I am usually very anal about maintenance and fixing things. Guess time flys when you have a 2 year old at home after work!
