how can i get the turn signals to turn off when not in use?

when the lights are on, the front turn signals are always on also. kind of like tail lights, they are dim at first and then when activated by the turn signal they get brighter… i just want nothing on but my HID and fogs. i also plan on doing the fog light mod but im curious if anyone has done something about this or am i just being picky? i think we have the 3 wires coming out of the wire harness and i know 2 are positive and one is a neg. i think one is for the running light. would it be bad to cut this. would it throw a code or make it not work at all? can i use a butt connector to connect it back if it does nothing?

I could be mistaken, but I think the running lights are required by law.

However, if you live in an area that would allow this, you would probably need to disconnect the positive feed. In case the computer realizes the light is out, you could use an appropriate resistor between that positive and ground to fool it...

Seems like a lot of work for something... well... kinda odd.

it just makes no sence to me…we have high output hid bulbs…why do i need a dim light right next to it? im thinking of going the led route and just getting it all 6000k since thats what hid and fogs i have i have anyway. i have a standard 1157 instead of a 1157a bulb in the turns now but its still yellowish. and i also just took out the T10 looking bulb thats right below the turn signal and i tinted the outside of the headlight that has that amber looking rectangle part. im just trying to get everything white and 6000K. and if i can stop the turns from being on constantly i would.

Disconnect the low circuit on the bulb connector so that only the high circuit is on when activated.

^ that, but as mentioned by BetterBob, they are required by law so you may be asking to get pulled over for not having them.

The amber running lamps are required in all 50 states. If you notice they are the only light visible from the sides of your car, showing the front of the car from the side, the rears are red as well. when you are being viewed from the side, they are the only indicators at night and dictate which direction your car is in...

Ive seen a lot of new cars without Front Running Lights they just have a DRL like LEDs: Mercedes, Audi and BMW don't have amber front running lights.. So how its required by law? Only if you have them?

To OP Switch to LED Switchbacks and problem solved! there are some even with same KV as some HIDs most popular is 6000K Switchbacks to Amber.

They are DAYTIME lights, nighttime requires amber and red running lights..."In the US, amber front and red rear side marker lamps and retroreflectors are required. " from here... b Kahane, Charles J. ^ I know the difference between DRL and Night Running Lights.. Still doesn't explain how these cars don't have running lights:

Angel eyes is why. Most visible from the side as mentioned previously. Put a set on my 99 tl-p and kept the low circuit active on the amber (that's what they're wired to) and use them to fulfill the local requirement for lights on in the rain (see avatar/album/posts for details, get compliments on them alot)

A. None of those cars have their headlights on (or just have the DRL/led on for picture purpose)

B. If they dont have the amber in the headlight They have side marker lights on the fenders

Note no side marker lights, Headlights on and Amber in the corner of the lights

The modern automotive designers have come a long ways since the days of our aging 2nd Gen TL's. The newer cars, especially the top end models really have some awesome headlamp configurations built into them. Apparently, the latest technology has allowed them to incorporate all the necessary stuff to be compliant with the state's laws. The designers just found ways to have the headlamps appear more stealthy....concealing the vital amber lamps on the headlamp corners. But, they are there !!! it's MAGIC !!! ha, hah

you have to check with USDM spec vehicles Skirmich, there could be slight differences between countries... my current headlights from Korea don't have a spot for the parking lights on the corners..

but to op, you can disable them.. if you're talking about the lower 194 bulb under the turn signal, i just removed the bulb and i masked off the contact on the 1157 bulb.

an old photo

after reading all the comments about the laws and such i may just keep the lower 194 amber bulb in place, which for all you 2nd gen owners know its a white bulb with amber housing. but as for the front turn signals only i am changing them to white. (personal preference so please be kind) i just ordered the LED replacements yesterday and a set of resistors. the only time ever that this would be noticeable is at a turn obviously, and i believe most cop interactions are just driving down the street, and like i said i will be putting back the 194 bulb for amber requirement regulations. but for future reference i have a question for jjashaa…what did you use to mask off the connection? i feel like tape would not be very effective and get caught in the wiring harness and the glue would just get messy. and was it the middle prong you blocked off?

electrical tape. lol

i did on the bulb contact. its one or the other of the two on there. 50/50 chance to get it right the first time.

if I were you.. i'd take out the 194 too.. i've tried it and it looks silly with the bulb still lit up in there..
