Horrifying fuel economy with E10 gas

After getting a discount card for a petro Canada gas stations I switched from shell vpower to take advantage of the great discount. I did this last week and I noticed that in 4 days driving (8x20mi) I was low on gas. I thought maybe I didn't fill it up all the way last time, so yesterday I Toped it off Witt more 94 octane 10% ethanol gas (vs. Shell 91 0% ethanol). Mind you the higher octane gas is more expensive too. Today after 100mi driving I noticed I spent about half the tank! Wtf? Calculated my mileage at the pump and I got about 13mpg! I do mostly city driving with about 30% highway. I always get around 22mpg this way and that's with hitting the vtec couple times a day. I filled up with e10 again just to make sure it wasn't bad gas, I'll report back. But ya this is the first time I'm running e10 in the tl. It has had shell 91 octane 0 ethanol all its life.

Car is in excellent condition, recent on time synthetic oil change, seafoamed few months ago and had fuel injectors cleaned. Last road trip I scored 29.3 mpg for ~75mph cruising with 3 passengers. That was on ethanol free gas.

Either you miscalculated, or something is wrong with your car. Try resetting your ECU and recalculating. Even with 87 octane E10, you will get more than 13 mpg. These cars ARE equipped to handle E10. Sure it's not good for mileage or the rubber components of the fuel pump, but it won't kill your mileage to 13.

Don't assume the needle goes down in a linear fashion. It uses a simple floater, and the gas tank isn't vertically symmetrical.

Ive also noticed less mpg running the e10 here in the u.s. It has to do with the way ethanol is burned during combustion and these cars weren't designed for ethanol. It was probably in testing at that time.

E10 is part of a government cleaner fuel burning campaign. Unfortunately the trade off is while the ethanol emits less harmful pollutants into the air is has less "energy" than regular gasoline and therefore more is required during detonation. Thats why mpg are less with E10 vs regular super unleaded.

gas used to contain MTBE which was found to contaminate the groundwater--oops

so they switched to Ethanol, part of the grand plan to get farmers back to work,
except several world situations then caused a shortage of the corn used to make ethanol!!

If you think it runs bad now, the us govt has approved 15% Ethanol added

Watch out Canuks, there may an an influx of ex-pat performance nuts moving there... just for the good gas~

I have to run e10 in my rdx because of Hondata reflash (increased boost) and because the only gas with more than 91 octane here has 10% ethanol. In that vehicle my fuel economy did not change. On the v6 tl it seems ethanol plays a big influence on fuel economy.

you cant calculate your MPG's until your next fill up, the gas guage isnt linear.
