does factory alarm actually work?

I've had my '99 TL about 3 months now and was just wondering, when I push the "lock" button on the remote twice, the horn beeps, lights flash, is the anti-theft system armed? I expect an alarm when I lift the door handle (the "security" light blinks) but there is none... So, if anyone wants a free 10w6, haha... Seriously though, does this car have an alarm system? Or is mine broken/disabled? Thanks-
(guess I could readthe manual, huh?)

It works but for a 30K car it doesn't have a $10 shock sensor. Meaning someone can crash into your CL or TL and since there is no shock sensor it just thinks everything is peachy.
It only goes off if you unlock the door or open the hood with the alarm turned on.

There are good instructions for installing a shock sensor floating around somethere. Maybe someone else will chime in or you can use the search function to find a lot of info on it.

Not many factory alarms will sound when you simply lift the door handle, unless the door opens, or if someone reaches in through an open window and unlocks the door, etc.. They could have done a lot better even for factory alarm standards, but your alarm is fine, nothing wrong.

why don't you sit inside and arm the car, then open the door.

yeah we dont have the best alarm, but its not the worst either. My friends geo lets you unlock the door, hit it, start the car, pop the hood and do all kinds stuff with the alarm armed. I wonder what it actually does.

The basic way to look at it....

You know the sensor that triggers the dome light to come on? It only comes on when the doors are opened. Same type sensor is what triggers the factory alarm. Nothing more than that.

So you can break the glass and nothing will happen. You can kick the car and nothing will happen. You can even pry the hood or trunk, and NOTHING will happen!

Why dont they put a decent alarm in the car? Come on its a Acura for god sakes..

Also Are all cars like this??
Are all the Lexus' and Mercedes like this??
What type of alarm does a bimmer or mercedes have??

Also Why dont any car manufacturers pre-install Remote Start, so it comes stock from the car?
