Smile A cup of Coffee and DTC P1709

A story with a happy ending.

MIL is staring at me on my wifes car. Off to Advance Auto to check codes. DTC P1709 is the verdict. Thoughts of "Man, I'd hate to have transmission problems." But the car is running perfectly, so I think all is not lost.....

Look up the code in the Acura manual (section 14 page 38) and get to work. I just love the line "Remove the center console." Well about 30 minutes later step 2 is done. Wife comes down to check progress and sees her car in parts. Turns and leaves.

OK there's spilled coffee darn near everywhere. So I get some Q-tips to clean the Mode Switch Circuit connector put the whole thing back together and reset the PCM.

Life is good & the MIL is out. My confidence in taking stuff apart and getting it back together is now even better than before!

Well, let's say there was a conviction without confession. On a subsequent trip downstairs I submitted evidence of coffee in the "fluid" state near the emergency brake stuff under the console. I guess the cool weather plus a closed area made evaporation quite slow....

To answer another question, the MIL light was on. But I guess I'm not sure the difference between a MIL and a CEL. From what I see there's a light on the dash that is titled Malfunction Indicator Light but geez, it's got the word "CHECK" on the image. I guess that's so they can act snooty & charge more. Actually my house doesn't have a garage, it has a "motor room" or so says my builder.

Pixrob, this is an old topic but maybe you can help me out. I'm having this same issue with the P1709 code coming up. Can you with the DYI on this. I want to see if I can make my MIL light go off. BTW, I've searched how to get the console apart so I guess I just need to know what to clean.

if its the Maint required light the 1709 has nothing to do with it.

I'm sorry, it's the check engine light that's on. And the reading I got was
"P1709- Problem Transmission Gear Selection Switch Circuit"

have you spilled something in the area of the shifter? to get to that you have to take the center console apart and its look for the gear selector piece on the shifter and clean the contacts our with a qtip

Yea I've spilled coke, coffee, you name it! I know it's a mess in there. I'm goingto get the '02 cup holders after I clean my contacts.

UPDATE:

I took a part my center console and there dried coke and coffee everywhere. I cleaned everything up and took the connectors a loose and cleaned in them (they were nasty too). I reste my computer by disconnecting my battery and the check engine light has been off for about a month and a half. Great work Acurazine!!!

everytime i take apart my console, i end up with extra screws!! lol
