Uhm, no offense but why in the world would you want to do that? If you didn't want the gold chrome why did you buy it? No it will not come off with paint thinner, its not paint, its gold chrome as far as I can tell. If not, then it has some coating on it to protect it.

Usually a metal plating is electrolytically applied to a surface. Electrodes are attached to opposite ends of the object to be plated and it is dipped in a solution of the plating metal as it bonds to the object.

I have a feeling that it would be hard to remove just the gold plating and leave the chrome underneath intact, but you could try some rubbing compounds and abrasives. A better option would be to find someone who has chrome emblems and is looking for gold ones. Even swap.

Cool no offense taken...

it's the original acura grill with the logo and wing and it's all gold. i replaced that grill with a mugen , and my car is now all chrome instead of gold badges, lettering, etc. my thought was to take the gold off, and then there would be a chrome grill to match the car if i ever wanted to swap it out? why would i want to do that? why does neil wax the inside of his wheels? why does nate perform cardio thorasic surgery on his TL? it's all about the love! kman

bebber, the gold is faded in some areas!

thanks for the detailed explanation of the gold plating process! i've had gold kits on 3 acuras , and every one started to oxidze, get blackish stains , and fade. the underside of this grill is definitely the regular chrome grill just dipped. the whole underside is still chrome , they did a bad dip job! anyway, i would swap with someone in a minute, but my gold grill is'nt perfect. although it is unique! it's one of the 1st "fat wide wing" grills that they discontinued almost immediately. i'll post a pic soon, ive never seen another like it! kman
