D5 is a tall gear and it will bog you down limiting your top speed. D4 will allow you to achieve top speed while D3 may limit your speed depending on where you redline.
It all matters what speed you race to. I am actually not sure what speed D3 redlines at. This is what I think, but I might be off base so please correct me if I am wrong.

It doesn't matter if you put it in D3, D4 or D5. Those positions only limit the gear that the transmission will shift to. D3 will start you out in first, shift to second, shift to third then not let the transmission shift any higher. Ditto for D4 and D5. I'm talking 2000's and 2001's here: If you're doing 90 through the traps, you're not even at redline in third gear, so it doesn't matter if you run the quarter mile in D3, D4 or D5. There will not be any differences in quarter mile times between the three selections.

It is useful if you want to keep the tranny in a particular gear and not fiddle around with the SS...
You are at a red light and IS300 wants to race put it in D3 and floor it goes up to 90mph... then again with IS300 you don't have to bother... you'll eat it either way
I put it in D3 or D4 when I want to make sure I don't go to upper gear...

Just my 2 cents...

just as a kinda sidebar FYI, the tranny starts in 2nd gear when in Auto, only if you step on it will it back down to 1st to take off quickly. MB's do it too.
Of course in SS it's in 1st from the get-go.
