Any experience with H&A Transmissions in SoCal?

I have a 2g TL with 200k a sick trans. I know many here have been happy with the AV6 swap, but before I go that route I want to take a good look at replacing/rebuilding the existing trans.

A very knowledgeable local indy honda repair shop recommends replacing my existing trans with a rebuilt unit from H&A Transmissions. The trans would have a 3-yr/unlim miles warranty which includes the labor to R&R the unit in the event of a warranty repair.

Does anybody here have any first-hand experience with H&A? I like that they are a Honda/Acura trans specialist, and I like the 3-yr warranty.

But I thought I'd ask here to see what the group knows about them.

Again, I am aware of the AV6 swap option, and there are many threads dealing with that.

But in this thread I'm just asking about experience with H&A Transmissions.

Thanks in advance! This board has been a phenomenal resource over the years and I'm hoping someone here has experience with H&A rebuilds.

Lol...guaranteeing the stock transmission in this car reminds me of the scene from Tommy Boy about guarantees; check it out sometime if you're not familiar.

I have no experience with them; but if I was willing to pay extra to have someone do my transmission I'd too research as much as possible.

While reviews (typically) don't favor this business, the video below shows that they appear to be very focused on rebuilding Honda and Acura transmissions and I would imagine that they do it quite well compared to most other shops. I'd guess that the bad reviews could be attributed to many things here: other unknown failure points in a customers vehicle; or perhaps the inherit flaws in the transmissions that cause them to fail quickly (hence the tommy boy reference).

Hope this helps...tried really hard to steer clear of the AV6 topic

My understanding is the latest top-quality rebuild kits for the H5 transmission bring them all up to the AV6/BAYA engineering build. If you're going to go with a rebuilt (more likely a remanufactured) unit, then other than cost, there is, in theory at least, no benefit from going down the AV6 rabbit hole.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

It looks like the best technical solution is the H&A option... also the most costly.

I've had the car since new, and and it is in excellent shape other than the trans. Tires, brakes, timing belt, water pump, strums etc were all done in the last 3 or 4 years, so I am hoping the car has some life in it.

As my dad used to say, “you pay your money and you take your choice”.....

This board is a marvelous resource — thanks to all for your help.

Did you ever have the work done at H&H? I'm having some issues and trying to decide what I should do next.

I did have my local indie shop install an H&A rebuilt trans. Three year, unlimited mile warranty.

it ha

It was not cheap at $4k. But the car has been mine since new, and is in near-perfect shape. I got 200k miles on the factory trans, and hope to be driving it for another 100k.

so far it has been awesome... truly like a new car.

H&A re-machines the housings to remediate bearing bores that have worn. This is a big deal for long life. The cheap rebuilds probably won’t do that.

I wanted to try the AV6 swap, but that is beyond my ability and I was unable to find a local shop that would do it. YMMV on that.

So I went with the high-cost but hopefully low-risk solution. Time will tell if it was the right move.

keep us posted on what you decide to do so we can all learn...

I know this is an old thread. I would like to share my experience with H & A Transmission. I have a 2002 TL Type S, owned since new. It has the original transmission with the oil jet kit installed in the 2004 recall.
At 145K miles, it started to slip. I did all the maintenance work in the hopes that it would last longer. Sadly, it did not. I have read this thread sometime ago, and decided against an AV6 swap.
I contacted H & A directly and asked some technical questions about the remanufacturing process and the parts that they replace. I felt confident that H & A would be the right choice for me.
I asked them to use my original core. I contacted a known service center for the removal and installation of the remanufactured transmission. I also had them replace the transmission mounts, and the rear main seal.
It took about 10 days total to get my car back. It now drives so well. All the shift points are precise. Gear changes are firm.
Its been close to 5 months now, and everything works. No leaks, just works well.
Granted, this was not cheap. A local Transmission rebuilder with warranty quoted me 30% less.
I just went with H & A due to the extra machining + metal sleeve they do.

I am just sharing my experience. I have no connection to H&A whatsoever.

As the original poster let me post a quick update…

i bought an H&A rebuilt trans in 2019. It is running great 4 years and ~25k miles later.

It wasn’t cheap but the H&A trans has been bulletproof so far.

thender, thank you for the update! That is good to hear. I did my research before jumping into this repair. I read your post here sometime ago, and decided to look into H & A even before my transmission started to fail. The H & A CEO even contacted me to acknowledge my positive experience.
May I ask what is your maintenance schedule for servicing the transmission? Thanks again.
