Another dead trans

99 TL, 121k, trans is done. The Acura dealer is submitting a help letter to Acura to see what they can do for me. Oh well, I guess I'll wait and see what Acura has to say.

Darn nice of them to try.

Were there any warning issues?

How fresh was the fluid?

No warning signs really. I was driving to a wedding on Saturday that was about 20-25 mins from my house. When I was about a block or so away the trans started shifting erradically (sp) and the rpm's were going crazy. Then when I drove it home, it was fine on the highway but started fucking up again as soon as I was in stop and go traffic. I let it sit all day Sunday and didn't drive it again until Monday morning just to the Acura dealership. The fluid level was fine but kinda dirty. I have a pretty good relationship with the Acura dealer here so they will try as hard as they can to help me out. Over the last 10 years I've been taking 5 different Acuras to the same dealer so they know me pretty well there.

The dealership said Acura isn't offering any help. But the dealer is selling me the parts at dealer prices(I work for a dealership also) and the labor at a discounted rate. So I'm looking at $2664.00 out the door. I'm just gonna get it fixed. 3 yr/36k mile warranty.

retail at dealer 4500+ for parts and labor

you need to see if car is part of the court case extended warranty
call acura 1 800 382 2238x5 ---need cars VIN
ask if part of the warranty group
even if not- we can educate you on `Goodwill Warranty`

can also register online and look it up yourself in the `recall` section

hopefully the dealers comment of `bring it back if it acts up`- means `we ckd and you have warranty`--let it blow up and we will see you in a week~

65kmiles is right on schedule for trans failure--no kidding,,mine went at 68
dealer techs say anything after 50 is normal

dont be surprised if they find bad front motor mount--they often fail at about the same time,,but its MUCH cheaper to install with the trans removed--part $120~ labor 15$

are you `covered VIN range` for the extended trans warranty ?

register online thru link I posted above and ck recall section
If it says Transmission Extended Warranty OPEN-thats part of the vin range
It helps to know if the first one was warranty or goodwill, that info will tell us

being past the 109 limit,,thats going to need a lot of goodwill from acura
Did you maintain/service the car with the dealer you are at? that helps.
oil changes,,brakes,,anything that says you were a good customer they made money on.
Bought 5 acuras in the family...
anything else that makes you a candidate for a 4 grand freebie?
brand loyalty, member of acurazine.com,...
unemployed, new baby, student,,whatever the truth of your situation,
go speak with the service MANAGER about some assisitance from corp,,they are humans too~
That person calls regional rep and see what they are willing to do
Best of Luck and Skill to you for this conversation

in 2004 there was a recall to install an external oil jet kit
An internal inspection was made by boroscope to look for certain heat damage
If that damage was found the trans was dead,, and recall install part cancelled- changed job to warranty replacement of trans unit

most cars were ok and got the kit
You can tell if replaced trans by looking at the trans, are there blue painted bolt heads on major bolts into the trans? warranty unit!

or is there, on top center of trans, where the filler hole would be.., a small black line and funky fitting, bracket has 1 12mm blt holding it--thats the oil jet kit

Acura will say its FIXED by installing the kit- but it fixes ONE problem,, not the one most of us have!

you have to look for the painted bolt heads to know if its been replaced

take a box of donuts or ice cream sandwiches to the service manager to generate goodwill from your end~ so when you need them....they like to see you

fill out the customer survey cards with all 10s, mention helpful people by name,,do the acura online and phone surveys
that info all gets directly back to the service manager,
bonus cks are determined by these comment cards, good or bad

again- thats about generating goodwill, let the manager know you give them a perfect score too,,write a thank you letter for the service they have provided in the past (those often get put on the wall to show off)

really? cause when my tranny died, acura said they would cover about 30% off the price, would be 2700. Reading the boards here, that seems like a typical price for a replacement at acura, regardless if they tell you labor fee, discounted price, etc. Only reason I sold my car was because of the stupid tranny. Sucks cause you pay that much and its going to die again and really the only way to prevent it is to swap in a 6spd. But like you, I didnt have time to search for a 6spd and all the parts since it was my daily driver. Anyways, good luck with the tranny, i feel ya 100% on it

goodwill rate depends on covered vin or not, miles on car, your reputation as a customer of that dealer (they made profit off you in the past on brake jobs etc, consider you a nice person)

a 99 at this point in time is out of luck with CORP for picking up the tab
but, that ziner was able to get a ~goodwill~ deal direct thru buddies working at the dealer--always nice to have friends in the right places

sad but true these trans average a low life- same with the rebuilts
technology has come a long way since these early forrays into SS mode and electronic trans,, designed way back in the 80 and 90s in order to be in cars in the 2000s

buy a new car- it will spend a lot of time in shop for warranty repairs!!
No way i would get a new or used car now without serious warranty

do what you can for our trans with a yearly 3 qt drain and refill- thats the best you can do for it without changing trans oil brands... and taking a chance on them

that 6 speed is no perfect unit itself
Im guessing it has the gen3 MT 3rd gear issues--doesnt it figure they cant get a decent 2nd-3rd gear set in manual or auto trans~

I have no data on that cls trans reliability--just guessing many parts and problems are similar across the brand

Got her back last night and she shifts extra smooth! I put it into reverse and didn't know I was in gear because it never clunked. So far so good.

I suggest you treat it nice for 500 miles--no redline rpm shifts
then next 500 more aggressive to see if its going to have any problems...let it happen early
after that enjoy as desired

change 3 qts trans fluid once a year, with every other engine oil change, and it should last you some years!!

sorry about the spelling and punctuation. Ya i had the same thought but even a little bit of help is a blessing, I love the car and besides a few things it's in great shape, and right now i can't get a new car so i would rather pay to get a new transmission, the a beater for 3k.

138k and they went anything at all --shows you are a valued regular customer to the dealer
Make sure to give them all 10s on the survey card, and let the service manager know you are doing that--comes back to them in the form of bonus cks~

anything less than all 10s is a failing grade to corp

i will give them all tens, they are the best dealership i've ever been to I always bring my car there even though it is 30 - to 45 minutes from my house. I was very happy they tried to even ask acura or do anything price wise. they also gave me a free car wile my car is being fixed. so ya if and when i buy a new car it will probably be from them

Does anyone know if the re-manufactured trannys have any issues? I had mine done about three years ago and and have just passed the 3yr/36k warranty. My tranny is smooth and shifts great, but how long that will last I don't know.

they have some issues,, but units replaced after mid 2005 are in a new better case-
so fewer failures from oil starvation
It happens, but not nearly as much

keep up on your 3 qt fluid changes every year is all you can do for it

Well . . . my tranny is gone and was searching for any new info on swaps and such as I'm well past the 7yr mark even though the current tranny is one month shy of having gone just 2yrs. Anyway, just in case I missed some detail in my advantage I checked the site and here's the direct quote. My only hope is that there'll be a 3yr/36k warranty with the replacement tranny.

American Honda is announcing a warranty extension for the automatic transmission on all 2000-02 3.2TLs, all 2001-02 3.2CLs, and some 2003 3.2TLs and 3.2CLs. The automatic transmission and torque converter are now covered for a total of 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date of original sale. We are providing this warranty extension because a higher than normal number of automatic transmissions in certain vehicles may have problems due to defects in material or workmanship beyond the 4-year, 50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.

thats way old info!!

its now 7 years plus 9 months or 109 kmiles,,114.5 kmiles for cars with odometer error vin's
whichever occurs first

What are you at miles and year wise? miles on replacement trans?--had the fluid changed in the 2 years?

on replacement trans under warranty- they come with 12/12 warranty

if you did a `partial pay` on a `goodwill warranty` after limits,,say you paid 300 or 500 or 1000 or 2500,,you should have gotten the 3/36 for 300$ as part of that.
cant buy it unless its after regular warranty

your best bet is to speak with the service MANAGER in person- show receipt from replacement- discuss that 2 years is pretty short trans life by anyones standards, and see what corp will do on a replacement
they call the regional rep and a process starts
Express brand loyalty!--see last pages of tranny failure thread for details

You have to know what will make you happy- so the SM can attempt to do that--
they need a goal--if you feel 500 or 1000 is reasonable on your part now--state that
