Another Carbon Fiber Pillar Project [56K beware]

Like many of our TL, the B-pillar are flaking off. "UglyPsycho" did his carbon fiber pillar project and I wanted to do the same. So I bought the CF sheets...problem is that it wasn't the same type that UglyPsycho used. He had a very flexible sheet, the sheet I bought is the thinnest 0.2mm, but the top clear layer was a thin and hard instead of a more flexible. So insted of wrapping it around the pillar, I had to cut them to size.

I bought Hayame Carbon Fiber Sheet 9.7x24, Twill 2x2, backside adhesive online. I bought 2 sheets...but end up using 1

I took of the pillars, I forgot to take pictures when I stated...very simple to take off. No need to remove the entire weahter strip...just need to bend it back a bit and slide out one side...remove the 4 screws...and lift "UP and OUT" motion to remove it.

I then got some brown wraping paper to make the mask.

I moved along the edge and made a mask and remove the extra paper

After I got that, I placed the mask on the CF sheet

Place the pieces next to each other, saves me 1 cut

After Cut

Done and Installed....kinda hard to take pictures of CF and get the true "3D" effect of it.

I have the same Hayame CF sheet sitting at home too. I bought a kit on eBay a while back that covered the B-Pillars the same way and I noticed that the company basically did what you did. The kit also covered the small pillars by that little rear window. So if you have extra pieces, you can use it for that.

I was planning on covering the burlwood door inserts with the Hayame CF that I have.

Very nice. Did ya save the brown paper templates? Maybe you can pass em around so people don't have to remove the pillars to make templates.

Very nice job- I just received my glossy black vinyl from Rvinyl for the same job. I was trying to remove the pillars off the car once before (just to see how complicated it was), and I still haven't been able to get them off the car. Can you give additional details about how to get them off? Thanks in advance. I'll post my pics with the black gloss vinyl once I do this to my car.

Yeah, I'am planning on doing that little piece also...I just need to get the dimensions of it...can't remove it to make a mask.

About covering the burlwood door inserst...the 0.2mm Sheet can bend to the shape of the inserts..but the adhesive won't be strong enough to hold the shape...you probably need to use a stronger adhesive or get a more "moldable" sheet.

The usual CF is usually black...but the 2x2 twill gives a 3D look and changes the color to black/gray/light silver depending on the angle you are looking at. They have color CF sheets..but they just come in baisc blue, red, yellow.

The replacement pillar from Acura where $40-50 each from acura247.com or acuraautomotiveparts.org . Some one posted that their dealer replaced all 4 pillars for $80 (labor included)...i don't know if all dealers would do this. Another memeber posted that he got Acura replacements and they started flaking again in months.

I still have them...I'm planing on doing my Mom's 99 TL... I'll try looking into turning it into a picture or pdf file or something.

The way I cut the CF pieces..I extended them pass the bottom on the outer weather strip/exterior trim. If you don't want to remove the pillar, you can cut the CF piece shorter a bit

I was conderding that...the problem is that the black trim around the window is NOT a SEPERATE piece...it's part of the door...it's the metal door with black vinyl adhesive wraped around it.

So if you wanted to do that...it's better to get the CF sheet from the guy UglyPsycho bought it from ebay...since it will wrap. But I think it would look hot

On ebay, you can get the Hayame ones, you can get them from online sites like I did... Some racing stores might carry them, or they can get it ordered.

The ebay on had the UK seller that sells a "more flexible" sheet...that one seems like you can wrap around the pillar.

If you don't want to do all the work....when I was searching for CF...i ran across a store that sold them already pre-cut...i think it was $75. I'll try to find that e-store again.

There is an excellent writeup of removing the B-pillars by AcuraTLFan I just found- this might be a cheap, easy fix for all of us with the B-pillar problem:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124277

I'm doing mine in the next few days (when it stops raining in NJ )

AcuraTLFan and AcuraTLSFan are both ME.

I registered the AcuraTLFan on the old Acura-TL.com site when I was researching on buying a TL. I got a 02 TL-S. So when I registered as AcuraTLSFan at the old Acura-CL.com . Now that they combined the two sites...I sometimes don't remember which screen name I log into under when I post

AcuraTLFan, what did you use to cut the carbon fiber? Did you use a straight edge to make the cuts so clean? I installed it on my driver door and my cuts weren't so clean, so I had to buff the edges to make them round by using a nail file. What did you use?

Sorry for all the questions but I want mine to be a natural looking thing.

Thanks!

I used my moms heavy duty steal frabric scissors. They are just professional fabric scissor. When I started myself I was afriad that I would'nt get striaght cuts...but they ended up nice.
