1999 Acura TL: Swapping 2 Car Trannies Transmission

I have 2x 1999 Acura TL:
1. Black TL= has good body with a failing transmission (clunking on going from Park to Reverse) as well as engine with 176K miles. Could this problem be solved by replacing the shift solenoid?
2. White TL= has messed up body from accident with 9 months old tranny directly from Acura dealer as well as engine with 78K miles

I am thinking about swapping the transmission and possibly the engine.
I have never done this before.
I do not mind providing DIY when finished

Can someone guide me through on how to get this done?

So far:
- I have taken out all the air filter, intake, condenser, radiator from the white TL. Hence, the tranny is somewhat visible.

I need some guidance to take the tranny out such as:
1. Tools to get to pull the tranny out
2. Which bolts to loosen (location, diagram, picture, anything that helps)
3. Something to hold on to the tranny during the move (Engine lift ?)

Thanks in advance

For this project you should get a shop manual from Helm publications.

According to the shop manual the engine and trans are lowered down together and removed from under the car. You will need a floor crane or chain hoist to lower the engine/trans out. There would be no need to separate the engine and transmission if you want to swap both.

If you wanted to swap just the transmission, I would support the back of the engine with a chain hoist. The shop manual tells exactly how to proceed. You will need a trans jack under the transmission.

Helms manual. I suggest putting the Engine/Tranny in as one unit into the black TL. Take the engine from the black TL and keep it as a spare (doubt you will need it) or sell it on ebay.

Before installing the engine you will be using I suggest changing the timing belt/waterpump/sparkplugs, rear main seal. As it will be VERY easy with the enging out of the car. You won't have to worry about it for another 100k.

1. Where can I get the helms shop manual? How much is it? Does anyone has a pdf copy of it?

2. Where can I get floor crane, chain hoist and trans jack?

BTW, I need to do all these in a parking lot as I do not have a garage.

Is there any change in design for all the 1999 acura TL such as pin redesign, mechanism, etc?

Is there a 1999.5 Acura TL?

I just fixed my black TL. It's ok now. Just loose connection on one of the shift solenoid. I will probably waited a bit before swapping engine/tranny for this car.

However, the problem with clunking on Reverse is still not solved yet.
