06-07 accord trans swap

Ok guys I have been reading up on this for a couple pf days but I have found noone who can tell me what parts need ro be swaped from the old trans and if anything needs to be modified. I have an 02 type s with 164000 and ots second trans but now it is having problems and so is my torque converter (bad shutter). I'm a diy type of person and that's why I want to know what I'm getting into b4 I start. If you can offer me any help I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Stephen00TL 05-23-2012 04:34 PM

Sometimes a bad shutter can be a bad motor mount. I would check those first, it would suck to replace a transmission and it was a motor mount that was the problem

Skirmich 05-23-2012 06:06 PM

:agree:

I would never replace a Transmission Until it Slips Bad or Wont Shift...
Are you sure its on its way out???

blue02S 05-23-2012 10:04 PM

Well its not the motor mounts. They are just fine but the trans really doesn't slip but will randomly shift hard. It's just in the beginning stages. But the torque converter shuter is terrible, to the point that Im worried about it wobbling my crankshaft. But while in there ill have to pull the trans anyway. Why not just change the trans and have no problems.

dreem1er 05-24-2012 01:21 AM

try changing the fluid at least a 3 quart drain fill...if it continues then start saving to do a trans job, doesnt have to be instant but look into your options

acutee 05-24-2012 09:40 AM

The transmission filter replacement is highly required. clog filter, means lack of fluid, implies hard shift, slipping, and overheating; this is assuming your tranny is still okay.

blue02S 05-24-2012 10:11 AM

Ok well ill look into doing those things, and hope for the best. However I still would like to know wjat jas to be done. I would like to eventually swap it anyway (whenever I start doing engine mods).

These are the instructions my brother used when he converted my transmission back in March 2012. I am five thousand miles later, and the car drives, shifts, and runs great. I have never been a Honda fan, but this car is great. As you can see with the short amount of time and the large amount of miles driven. I recently took the car on a 2200 mile roadtrip it was amazing. Enough said about the tranny swap. Make sure to do all of the conversions when the trannies are side by side.

The entire trans oil heater assy, including the plate under the heater/cooler itself, and all of the brackets *don't forget a new gasket for the plate and anew trans filter* If the old trans has an oiljet kit installed, you will have to cut the t's out of it and fasten a new hose to both ends of the intermediate line.
The transmission range selector (otherwise known as 'neutral safety switch')will have to be swapped from the old trans, the newer switch has a different connector.
There is a small wire harness that connects to the 3 and 4 clutch pressures witches and the oil temp sensor, that will need to be swapped as well, theharness has a different connector to plug into the engine harness, but all theplugs going to the switches / sensors are the same.
You should not have to drill or tap anything, that's only with Odyssey transmissions, and very few at that.
I don't think the TL-S comes equipped with the power steering speed sensor, butif your's has it, it will need to be taken out of the picture... remove thehoses going to the rack, then loop a small hose point to point on the rackitself.
...... and that's it! Real simple, everything is direct bolt-on.

I used a tranny from an 06-07 Accord v6 auto trans listed as this:
A.T., Cpe (2 Dr), 3.0L (6 cyl)
MAKE SURE THE TRANS YOU BUY COMES WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER, and if it DOSEN'Tget a NEW ONE!!!
DO NOT USE THE OLD ONE, YOU WILL DESTROY THE NEW TRANS!!!!

Would this work on a tlp?

homeskillet43 06-01-2012 11:01 AM

sorry i cannot help you with that question.

Yes

So glad to hear everything is working very well! I have about 10k miles on my swap now, not a singular hiccup. NONE!

Tell your brother I said hello, it was real nice talking with him helping him through your swap

Once my trans goes I plan to do this swap but just a question, what about the oil jet when I do it? Should I keep that on?

If you source a 06-07 Accord trans, it would be pointless.

The newer (post 05) trans casings have re-engineered internal fluid passages to the problem areas in question.

Also, just to throw this out there, I have tried to google 06-07 Accord trans problems to see if those will eventually suffer the same fate as our OG TL trans, and haven't found much of anything, especially our particular issues.

blue02S 06-03-2012 12:05 AM

Thanks guys, thats what i was looking for. I understand that the 4th gear ratio is slightly shorter as well. Is it enough to notice at 60+?

livingbuddha1992 09-05-2012 01:43 PM

So is the 05' Accord tranny good enough?

Quizz99TL 11-13-2012 11:07 AM

Hey can these same tranny fit the 00 model TL or is it another model car and tranny please let me know my tranny is going out badly and already did the tranny flush and cleaned the sensors and all...

Yes these will fit in an 00 tl. I have had and 07 accord v6 transmission in my car for 2500 miles now

Quizz99TL 11-14-2012 08:55 PM

Thanks Dude... Now I got to go find that tranny now...

peewizzle 11-15-2012 03:32 PM

ok so i'm picking up an 07 tranny with 135k tomorrow for $875 from LKQ locally. the guy said no transfer case is included...as far as i know, our cars don't have one right?? i thought that was only 4wd vehicles. PLEASE correct me if i'm wrong before i pick this up. the guy also said all sensors are included, which as far as i've read doesn't matter right? since i am carrying everything over from the TL.

from people who have had this done... is it a job that i could do myself over a weekend or should i pay the $900 to have someone put it in. there's a shop down the street from my house who i explained the situation and they are NOT wanting to do the swap for me and i don't know if any other shops will either.

i need to get facts straight for this swap.
i have a 2002 TL-P.
i will need to swap over the warmer/cooler assembly from old tranny?
i will need to swap over the range selector (neutral safety switch)?
i will need to swap over harness for 3rd/4th gear switches????
since i have the oil jet on my tranny, i DONT swap that over??
will that mean i will have to reroute 2 lines?? if so which stream goes where?

i am really worried about what could go wrong, whether i do this myself or pay a shop to do it, and i want/need to get all the facts right before i put my baby down. i've dropped trannys on civics/old accords but never thought about doing it to my baby...if anyone has done it themselves please give me some feedback/advice

Stephen00TL 11-15-2012 04:24 PM

First of all that price is high with that amount of miles. Second you can do the swap with the right tools and as long as you are mechanically inclined. 900$ is about what I was quoted around me to do the swap but nobody wanted to do it because you had to swap sensors. Now here's exactly what you will have todo since you have a tl-p:

Take both transmissions and put them side by side. ( makes it easier to see what needs to be swapped)

1. Swap the entire cooler/warmer filter assembly on the top
2. Swap the range switch
3. Swap the small 3 and 4 gear pressure switch harness
4. Since you have a tl p you will need to get some hose and tight clamps, I used t clamps. You have to loop the power steering rack which will make it former but I like it better.

I did it myself with the help of a friend that has all te right tools and is mechanically inclined. It's not difficult it's just alot to remove and the transmissions way a couple hundred pounds. It took us about eight hours to get it done and we weren't rushing

peewizzle 11-15-2012 04:31 PM

i'm thinking i may have no choice but to do it myself now. i have the usual garage tools. jack stands, floor jacks, air compressor/tools, etc and i am pretty mechanically inclined, i've done all the work so far on my car myself and have done swaps in civics/accords but no v6 motors though...

1: do you have to move the engine at all? or is it jack it up, remove a few bolts and it will come off.
2: what does "loop the power steering rack" mean?

also, i've called around a few salvage yards and whatnot today in the new england area and unfortunately best price i can find is $875...
the rest i've found that were low miles like 60k and such were prices of $1100-1300.... ughhh

You don't have to remove the engine just jack it up then unbolt the transmission. If you don't have an engine hoist I would get one for the transmission. There is a power steering speed sensor, one line goes from the rack to the sensor then another line goes back from the sensor to the rack. The new transmission doesn't have this sensor so you have to pull the lines off then grab some new line and loop the rack. I've got a picture I'll try to post up later.

peewizzle 11-15-2012 04:45 PM

ooh ok now i have a better understanding of what you're talking about with the power steering. i believe i have a motor hoist somewhere i knew i bought one sometime this year when i swapped a nissan motor out but my place is so cluttered uhhh

hmm getting freezing cold weather now here in massachusetts...this is not going to be fun

Stephen00TL 11-15-2012 05:19 PM

With you Doug swaps before it should be straight forward. Engine hoist is important because you won't e able to maneuver hold that transmission by yourself. I had to do the swap in 100 degree weather :ugh:

peewizzle 11-15-2012 05:37 PM

Stupid question...do I drain tranny before un bolting?
I've only ever done manual swaps. Which gaskets do I need to purchase/replace
Then I gotta fig how much dw1 I need ugh I'd rather 100 degree than 35 lol

Drain it otherwise when you pull the axles out you will have a mess I've got all the parts you need at home il get them for you when I get there

Stephen00TL 11-15-2012 09:19 PM

25812-P7W-A01 oil filter cooler/warmer gasket
25450-P7W-003 spin on filter that connects to the oil cooler/warmer assembly
those are the main things you need, I also got new 3 and 4 gear pressure switches, and transmission mounts.

my buddy will be doing this swap for me this weekend on my 02 TL-S. I will be getting an 06 Odyssey trans for 500 less then an AV6 trans. My question is, should i get the AV6 or Odyssey trans? thanks in advance. Will one be easier then the other to swap?

zeroicea 11-16-2012 05:04 AM

Odds are the odyssey trans was treated a little better then the accord tranny. I doubt the odyssey was getting floored all the time where as the accord trans prob saw more abuse.

Yes the odyssey transmission works. It all depends on how long you plane in keeping the car. If your going to get rid of it soon get te cheaper one and don't worry about it.

I got the accord v6 transmission because it had the least amount of miles and it was the newest. Most of the odyssey transmissions around me were all I've 100k miles

peewizzle 11-16-2012 12:50 PM

thanks for the help Stephen, i showed my buddy, that has a shop, the instructions you wrote and he said he'll do it for me next week for cheap and he can get the accord tranny for cheaper than $875

now i hope my tranny will last into next week lol

damn i wonder where ya'll are finding these trannys cheap but here in new england seems like these parts are a premium. all the odyssey trannys i find have over 140k on them and cost at least $625 and i'm searching on car-part

No problem man. I actually had to drive a few hundred miles to get mine. And I paid. Around 1000$ for one with 29,000 miles

You don't have to but I would highly recommend that you do it

03_BigJ_TypeS 11-17-2012 06:39 PM

Hey guys, sorry for adding to a old tread but I am in trouble, I am currently texting from aside the road. My 03 TL Type S just hit me with the CE, VSA, and /!\ light combo. I'm letting it cool down for a bit before I try to make it home, kinda died on me and I wasn't able to do anything about it. I am interested in the Accord transmission for sure, I will be needing one soon it looks like. Does the triptronic still work if you do the swap? Also does anyone have a shop in the Tri-State area that has done the job? I am so busy with school and work that I may not have the time to do it. This couldn't have happened at a worse time for me financially wise.

fsttyms1 11-17-2012 07:55 PM

Yes SS mode will still work. That is all controlled by the ecu and has nothing to do with the trans.

Stephen00TL 11-17-2012 10:02 PM

Yes it work perfectly as long as you swap everything as I described. If you don't or forget a plug it won't work and will shift weird

when u say shutter. what exactly do you mean. my tranny alot of times on 5th gear on highway. 60mph 1.5k-2k rpm cruising (give a tad bit more of gas) makes a weird noise. i let go of the gas and its quiet again. 1 step on it aggressively and it down shift and accelerate perfect. no hard shifts EVER. just a mount would fix this or do you talk about something different?. not trying to thread jack.. just one question for one good answer relating to the OP.

Easiest thig would be to visually inspect the mounts. Side is easy to check, for the front look at the too and bottom and look for oil trail.
