Top speed is governor limited at 134. It drives perfectly at that speed. Non-governed Euro RL's top off at 156.

Top Speed: 100

After getting nailed in Wisconsin doing 86 in a 65, I've been a little more hesitant committing "felony speeding".

The ticket was initially $270 (6 points), but I was able to get it plead down to 14mph over, which brought it down to $175 and 3 points.

Other top speeds I've done in the past.

130 once. 120's often.
rock solid until 130, where it felt a little loose, like the wind gets underneath it.

I have a stock 99 RL (i know i know first gen.. lol).... however ive gotten mine up to 130 but it definitely had a little bit left....

and it's really stable too, I find myself going 80 on the highway then before I know it I will be up to 100, then sometimes ill go 110 on the highway if I'm feeling spirited, no problem. 120 i'll only do if it's not windy.... (there aren't too many cops on the highways in montana haha)

It's incredible how smooth and quiet the RL is at top speed. Driving the Ohio Turnpike toward Toledo (trusty V1 on, of course) yesterday, 90 mph came too easily. The car felt and sounded the same as at 70 mph. Wife had to remind me to back off at that point when SHE looked at the speedometer--she hadn't noticed anything until then. Normal cruising speed is 75-80 for me.

135 then the governor kicked in. kinda sucked though cause i'm sure this car can get to the 150's easy. hit 120 plenty of times. its almost hard not to. if you dont pay attention to it you will be at 110 without even trying. i actually have to put effort into driving 75-80. thank god for cruise control.

Behavior of governor for those of you that hit 134

For those that hit 134, what was the behavior of the governor? Did the tach just stop and car quit pulling, or was there an immediate fuel cut off...tach pulls back and the car lurches?

I find it odd that my previous gen ('01) TL was limited to 147mph, and the RL, which is a much more stable vehicle is limited to 134mph. I wonder if it has to do with the AWD system and it being able to handle the high speeds.

I'll never hit those speeds, it's more a point of discussion.

I think it must be some kind of setting either governed by regulation or chosen by Honda as fast enough due to liability, esp if non USDM are regulated to 155, as I read somewhere.

Just my two cents

Usually top speed is governed by the tire speed rating. Perhaps the RL has 134mph tires and the TL has 147mph tires?

Nope. The TL had, and the RL has V-rated tires.

Well the RL in the US comes with V rated tires, good to 149
Legend (RL) in Australia comes with W rated tires

TL in US comes with W rated tires, good to 168, so maybe you have found the issue.

Both W and V rated tires are well above the 134mph limitation on the RL. If anything it would justify a higher governer.

The euro RL doesn't have a limiter, the top speed is drag limited. I have no idea why the Us version is limited, but the usual reason is the tires. Most european cars also have limiters when importe here. Of interest, the S2000 and the TL (at least the manual version) have no limiters and both top out at around 150mph.
The limiter on the RL is a simple fuel cutoff when you reach 134, the computer cuts off the fuel supply and reengages it once the speed is reduced. If you kept the foot to the floor it would simply go through the cycle repeatedly.

hmm..

1993 Accord EX Coupe: jdm h22a, tein ss', custom exhaust, generic intake: buried the needle on the speedo at about 4500 rpm in 5th - kept pulling to about 6000 and chickened out.

2003 TL-S: comptech headers, mugen exhaust, k&n filter, tein ss-p's; hit the speed limiter. Car felt perfect up to 120 after that it started getting a little loose and the cop was slowly coming up with his lights and sirens blazing - seriously. To quote him, "I didn't think I'd catch you - should've kept going"..

2006 RL: A-Spec; 70mph.. recent law makes it a criminal offense to go more than 25 mph over the speed limit. Given that I got my one "get out of jail free" pass on the reckless driving charge with the TL - I'm not pushing it. Wife also promised she wouldn't bail me out of jail if I ever do something stupid like that again. And in my profession, any run-ins with the law are very very bad things.

Truthfully, it's way more fun and safe to simply dust other cars off the line and up to the speed limit.

Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. A normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side. This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the cop heart. Make the bastard chase you. He will follow.

The same reason as to why a bunch of things are screwed up on US cars - too many attorneys.

I think I broke 'the brick' once in the RL. Family takes priority these days. Other families as well.

I still have flashbacks of barely missing a full size 1000lb mammal at 140+ in my Lexus SC400 many years back on Extraterrestrial Highway @ night. It was smack in the middle of the road and I never saw it till I blasted by.

Top speed ever, 178mph-mod'd 928S4, again, many years ago.

Drive safe.
