What Grade/Type Oil is best used for High Mileage RL?
I was at my mechanic yesterday going to get an oil change and we got into this debate on which grade/type oil I should use for my 2006 RL ( has 100 K miles) I thought these cars were made specifically for 5W20 synthetic grade, which was what I've been using in the car all year round. I live in NY and it's been a pretty tough winter. My mechanic had suggested to put in 10W30 instead of 5W30 or 5W20. I only use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic with Mobil1 Filters.
Any one out there have any suggestions or opinions on what is the best oil grade and brand to use for High Mileage Acura RL with over 100+K miles?

Missing my
Take a look at the "extreme driving conditions" recommendations in the manual. I don't have mine handy at the moment. The mechanic has a point with cold weather and changing the oil viscosity, but the engineers at Honda probably know a bit about the topic, too!

The 10W30 would only need to be used in HOT weather conditions like the South encounters. You will want a lower weight for cold conditions. My old Legend suggested 5W20 unless it was hot, then suggested 10W30. I used 10W30 since I'm in Texas and it consistently gets over 100 degrees. I haven't changed the oil yet in my RL, but my guess will be 10W30 simply because of temperature.

I've always been a Mobil 1 Full Synthetic guy.. I always used 5W30 in my 2001 Nissan Maxima. Now that I have my Acura I use 5W20 as required, but I'm wondering what would be better to use now that the car is over 100 K miles does it make a difference for the engine to go up in grade? to like 5W30, or 10W30 or even 10W40?

There have been numerous threads over the years re: oil types and viscocity but I still have never heard of any problems to the engine because of oil. Synthetic maybe better but unless it's a 24 hour endurance race at max RPM in 110 degrees then synthetic is just a greater profit for the manufacturers. Your owners manual is your guide, your MID is your frequency and you will have sold the car long before you ever have a problem associted with oil.

I guess I'm one of those guys that stick with habit and I've always used Synthetic from my street racing days with the Max. I just stick with what I know works best. I don't mind the 20 dollar difference in oil changes only because I know I'm getting better quality in the car. I'll always use synthetic oil in my cars.

Syn is actualy not for stop and go driving but if you have it already then stick with it. And never use any other than stock viscosity rating!! She will start burning. And please change your PCV i never see anyone talk about it...

I am using castrol synblend on my 2010 pilot. it is only 11,000 miles. I like synthetic oil. but I don't want to put synthetic on the pilot until 80,000 miles.
joe, try castrol edge in your acura rl. You will love it.

One of the reasons I bought this '06 RL was because the PO used Mobil 1 from the 1st oil change until I bought it. Now I use Royal Purple 5-30. Find a synthetic that has little to no burn off between changes and stick with it. Mobil1 has some burn off from what I have found using it in both my pick up and my former RL. With Royal Purple I find no burn off. I can't speak for Redline but that is another high quality synthetic.

So what exactly do you notice when you use the expensive stuff and is it enough to "love it?" For me to "love it" the oil would have to last 25K between changes, make the car last 500K miles (even though I will sell it with less than half that), increase my gas mileage 50% and make it generate 20% more horsepower. If it doesn't do all of those things then I don't think that I could find the love.

I had very bad experence with royal purple. Redline is defenitly one of the best ful syn but I keep asking people and not one owner of an RL races! So at the most you would go with synblend but the best is to just use conventioal normal oil and change it all the time. Synthetic clains more miles but is not true all the time. Normal oil change is cheep any way.
