I have a problem with the rear sunshade, looked around, didn't find much.
when it moves down I see that the screen is not being pulled like it used to be before and sometimes part of the screen stay stuck above causing it next time I'm opening it to get stuck in an angle.
How do I take it apart?
Anyone seen this problem?

You will need to remove the entire rear deck to have a good look at it. There's instructions on how to do this in the garage.

Mine does the same thing, but only when it's cold out. In the summer time or after the car heats up, it has no issues. I've decided not to do anything about it because it appears to be temp related.

Yeah mine did this a couple of times. I just wiggled it, and tried again. Related to cold it seems. Haven't had issues again.

Slightly related, but my sunshade just doesn't work anymore. I never experienced the above problems, it's just that it doesn't go up anymore.

Before it fully stopped working, I would sometimes have to hold down the button before it would go up, so I'm thinking it might be the button itself that malfunctioned.

Anyone experience this before? Also, if I ever do get it fixed, is there a way to prevent it from retracting when I put my car in reverse?

I don't think so, almost every car I've ever driven with a rear sunshade does that. I think the only one I drove that didn't do that was an '06 s430 I drove, but I drove that so long ago that I'm a little fuzzy about that.

That's a shame. I really liked the sunshades as I didn't want to tint the windows and I guess that button just wore out, so to speak, from 8 years of constant use.

There's no motor sound when I hit the button, so imagine it's more electronics than anything else.

Could be a fuse, the motor, the switch, or wire harness.

Never thought about checking the fuse, but I'm curious, would a bad fuse potentially cause intermittent operation? It always went down in reverse, just the fact that nothing would happen occasionally when I pressed the button for it to go back up prior to stopping altogether?

No. A fuse is binary in nature. The only thing in your scenario I could think of that could cause the fuse to blow would be the motor going out (your intermittent problem) and drawing too much current. Probably unlikely, just throwing out all the paths that need to work for operation.

Hey I had the same problem you were having. I finally had some time today to work on the module.

I removed the complete unit from the roof dissembled it into two separate part... the circuit board realized that the sunshade button was not connecting it did not seem worn out.

The fix: I heated up my glue gun and filled the hole half way with a glue pebble…. took it back to the car to test prior to final install and all was ok.

I now have a fully functional sunshade which goes up and down with only one touch…before I had to press 10-15 times and still would not get it up on occasions.
I am just now noticing that the sunshade backlight does not illuminate the button anymore because it’s filled with glue but that’s a small price to pay for a fully functional sunshade now.

Does anyone know if the sunshade button had a light to begin with?

Im not having any trouble with the switch, just the shade going up crooked.....so I dont use it. Plan on getting the windows tinted anyways.

Thanks! I suspected it was the button itself as it would always retract upon reverse without pause or issue, but just wouldn't go back up upon pressing that button.

Sounds easy enough, how did you remove the overhead console?

Pop off the two plastic map light covers with a flat head screw driver. Remove map light bulbs. There should be some screws in the map light assemblies. Once these are removed, use your fingers to pull the assembly down. Use latex gloves to protect the head liner from the oils on your hands. Once the assembly clips have released, remove the wire harness with a flat head screwdriver by pushing the tab down and out.

Yes it is...once you open and unscrew the casing you will see the inner piece of the sunshade button which is white...it will align with the (square) hole that needs to be filled.

Mine still works, but almost always I have to play around with the button - how I press it, how long I hold it, how hard I have to push it or sometimes it just works fine on a single light touch.
It is definitely a button that is losing connectivity somewhere - I just did not bother to open it and fix it.

Where does one grab the overhead console to pull it once the screws have been removed (and just how hard is the pull)?

Choices:

1) Pull down from either side of the upper console (one hand on each side of the console).
2) Palms face forward and pull down from the back of the console (closest to the sunroof).
3) Palms face rearward and pull down from the front of the console (closest to the windshield).

My sunshade was acting up again, and with some gumption was able to pull the overhead console down successfully (after removing the lens and the screws).

The console has two round clips towards the front of the car where the console "snaps" into holes in the roof, and there are wide "tabs" towards the rear where the console slots in above the headliner. Since it wasn't fully clear where to pull I started at the rear and sort of pried the headliner away from the tabs, and then kind of went to pulling from the front since that's where the pins are that snap into the roof.

Pitfalls: the pins might stay in the roof, and the plastic on the console where the pins slide in could break. The plastic gets brittle as I learned when putting the dismantled console back together, as the act of tightening the screws caused the plastic mounting holes to detach from the body of the console. My solution was to use a longer screw to carefully tighten the top panel into the lower body of the console into what remained of the hole.

My solution to try to restore the operation of the sunshade button was to thoroughly dismantle the top console. Once it was apart, I found the inner button on the circuit board that gets pushed when you press the outer console sunshade button and opened that up (be very careful as there's a loose metal part inside - which itself is kind of a mini-spring). I cleaned that metal part and the inner contact it touches on the circuit board and reassembled the inner button. I added some aluminum tape to the outside of the inner button to make it a little thicker (so that pressing the outer sunshade button really pushes the inner contact). I reassembled the unit, connected the cable and popped the unit back into place, reinstalled the screws and the lens and tested all the buttons -- so far, so good!
