Question about key fob/transponder chip

Recently I purchased an 05 RL with Tech pkg. from a man on craigslist, but he only had one key for the vehicle. I really don't want to spend the $360-$500 at the dealer to get a second key, so I was wondering if I could purchase a blank key and a Driver2 fob from eBay, and bring them to my local automotive locksmith to have him/her program them to my car? Or does only Honda have access to the programming equipment for their smart keys?

Thanks in advance

HI,

I was in the same situation when I purchased my RL. I purchased a clean FOB which included an uncut key from ebay. The thing looked brand new. Then I went to my local Acura dealer for them to reprogram. I believe they charged me one hour labor. Total cost was 1/2 the price if I had purchased everything directly from Acura.

I was in the same boat as you. I bought the RL with 1 key even tho the PO said when he trade in he gave 2 keys.

I bought one key fob and blank key from Ebay - dealer fiddle two days and couldn't get it to reprogram (even tho its my fault they charged me $0)
I bought a new OEM fob with blank insert - dealer charge me 1 hour of cutting and programming.

I had a similar situation, I bought a key from Ebey and couldn`t activate for a while. I was also helped by locksmiths from emergencylocksmithvancouver. But a month later it was again broken, although the dealer promised that there would be no problems after activation. Need to more carefully choose the keys.

I bought a key off eBay for $60, I got lucky. Dealership charged me $75 to program it.

One thing I will mention is if you ever have a remote that rapidly flashes when you press any button, it may not be dead. I had a remote that was doing that, took it to the dealership and they told me the remote was bad. After I got my replacement remote programmed I went to swap the batteries from my "failed" remote, and it started working. Turns out the FOB's are picky on which battery type is used, the 2016 coin cell batteries seem to work the best in my experience. So now I have two Driver 1 keys and one Driver 2 key.

Also, here's a cheap Driver 2 FOB on eBay right now.

I also forgot to add that all this cost me about $120. Because I had to buy a second key and also activate it https://acurazine.com/forums/images/...b9ee906169.gif. But the key cost about 40 dollars, because I wanted to save money and buy at discounts. Do `t save on such things please.
