Problem with Rear Sunshade going up
Hello All,
I was looking and I did not see any posts about problems with the rear sunshade.
When I hit the button, only one side will extend. Sometimes it will be the right, sometimes the left. Only once in a while will both sides fully extend. It looks like the shade accordions when it goes down. Should the shade roll up like the sunshade on a house?
Any help would be great!
Thanks!
Sean

I had the same problem with mine a couple months back. Turned out it was the plastic frame that the shade recesses into. One part of the frame was getting caught on the shade preventing it from raising and lowering smoothly.
Have a look at the frame while the shade raises and lowers, see if you can find out if it's getting caught on anything.

Thanks for the insight Swake. I was messing with it on the way home...not really a good idea while driving but oh well..and it went up just fine the first time. On the way down, it looked like the left just dropped when it was 2/3s of the way down. The right went down smooth. Then the left side went up and the right was stuck.
I have to get in there and look at it when it is light out. How did you stop the frame from getting hung up on the plastic housing? Did you have to juggle things around or did the housing come apart and have to to be pushed together?
Thanks agin for your help!

Update: I took a look at it and the left side is the culprit. It appears to be the plastic end cap that is getting hung up on something. I can't figure out what though. If I pull the rod to the right as is is going down, it frees itself and goes up. But as soon as it goes down, it gets stuck again. I pushed on both sides to make sure the end caps were on all o the way and they didn't budge...

This may or may not help. It does not address your issue, but it tells you in part how to take the thing apart. I would also look in the service manual online available through the Garage thread.

In my case the frame around the outside, where the shade recessed in to, was getting slightly warped by heat. Just enough for the passenger side to get caught on sometimes. I just pressed that side to bend it a little and that fixed the issue for me. The mechanics of the shade itself work good for me.

It is the recessed 'cradle' that the shade rests in when retracted. With the share recessed, run your fingers along the shade's top horizontal bar. Be sure it clears the cradle opening front and back, side to side.
Also check the recessed cradle when the shade is up that there is no debris, strings, etc. that is snagging the shade.
Next, check the rubber end-caps on the shade's top horizontal bar. Best to do this with the shade halfway extended (shut the ignition off while the shade is rising or retracting).
Another checkpoint - if the dealer attempted to silence any rattles for the sunshade, they typically place some felt patches in the cradle. They may have come loose, snagging the shade, or may have oozed some adhesive causing the shade to stick.
Last, after contorting yourself in the back seat, wash the rear window which will likely be smudged from your handiwork and inspections. Now that you are hot and with a sore back...pop open a cold one and celebrate conquering the samurai shade.

Well I checked everything and it still gets hung up on the drivers side. Even put some silicone on the ends thinking that may help. I have learned to hit the button as soon as it binds, allow it to go back and then hit the button again. Annoying as I now use the shade everyday to block the sun while it is parked.
