I rec'd a quote of about $300.00. Is that about right? I have not found a mechanic I trust in Delaware yet so I need to take to dealer..........

For both? Hmmm, I suppose that's fair. I do know that the fluids would likely run around $90 or so @ dealer prices, assuming they're simply doing a drain and refill of the transmission (about $50 for the diff fluid and $40 for the trans fluid). That leaves around $200 for labor. I don't see the job taking more than an hour and a half for even a entry level tech.

Yeah, they quoted an hour of service. As long as that is a fair price, cool. I think I am gonna go a 3X3 tranny myself. I did it on my TL, so hopefully it is the same procedure. Just gonna have them do the rear diff. Now, is there a transfer case that needs to be done as well? Thanks for the info fellas.

Differential requires about 4 quarts @ $8/quart. Two chambers. Yes, the rl has a transfer case.

Depends on your mileage. Rear diff does not require changing as often as the ATF for sure.

This is literally as easy as changing your oil, especially if you have access to a lift. If you've done it on the TL, this should be very similar!!

Just sayin'.....

Im sure theylll use the stock honda fluid for diff, is that ok folks or is there a better fluid to use? Im curious for my own use as well. I know for ATF its recommended to use Honda ATF.

@DanL07RL i'm at 117,000 miles now...not sure if the service was ever done, so i'm gonna have the rear diff and the xfer case done. You are right, i'm gonna do the 3X3 myself, probably tomorrow. Was feeling lazy so was gonna have the dealer do it but changed my mind. Need the $$$ I will save for Christmas. Now what are the recommended fluids to use for all 3? I am going to insist they use the fluids Acurazine recommends and not just stock Honda fluids. Thanks fellas.

Rear diff is usually 100 to 110 depending on which dealer you call and what special they have. That price sounds like they are doing the rear diff and a 3x3? I know Paula Acura in Highland Park, IL runs an “All fluid change” special you can use as a good comparison

I'm a stickler for OE diff fluid, but I have read about people using it. That's my 2 cents

I got quoted for $220 for all the drivetrain fluids and that also included the ATF also noted this quote from my local Acura dealer. FIY if you do 3x3 in the RL its more like 2.5 x3 all of this possible thanks to stupid splash guard design, where in the TL they actually has a panel that can be removed for this service.

This is what I have been doing for the past 102k.
LOF and trans drain (just the 3 qts that drains out) and refill every 15k miles
Then a LOF, trans drain and refill, Transfer case and rear diff every 30k
Something like this:
80,000 LOF / Trans -- $85
95,000 LOF / Trans / Transfer case / rear diff -- $138
110,000 LOF / Trans
I have been using all Amsoil (not a dealer) fluids per their site recommendations and have had zero troubles/leaks. The RL has 186k on it right now and I have put 102k of those on it in the last 3 years.
Ill continue to do this until its gone. I was able to do the change on the neighbors lift once, that was super nice and saved me about 45 mins. Usually takes a couple hrs when Im rolling around on the garage floor.

@holladts. The 3x3 is for the transmission fluid. As I understand it, you drain as much fluid as you can (usually 3 quarts), refill with new fluid then drive the car for about 10 mins going thru ALL the gears. You do that 3 times hence the 3X3 name. Drain & refill with 3 quarts and drive 3 times. I think xfer case and rear diff changes are done based on mileage 1 time at each change. Acurazine, please correct any inaccuracies that I may have stated. Hope this helps holladts!

From what I know you don't have to worry about the fluid until the code "6" show up on MID. E.G "A46" UNLESS you felt into "extreme use" like constant towing, driving in extreme heat/ cold climate (Well this ONLY works if the previous owner follow the maint schedule) Either that or around 3 years 30k-36k miles.

Easy dIY

i think I did all mine for 100 bucks or under. I used valvoline ATV. And valvoline 80/90. Seems to be doing fine after 10.000 miles. Good luck.
