Need to get windshield replaced on 08 RL
I am going to get the windshield replaced in my 08 RL from insurance, they have an agreement with Safelite so that is who I will use after paying deductible.
Has anyone had their windshield replaced? Any "watch outs" to advise the technician? Any problems with aftermarket windshields?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I had a 07 RL that Safelite replaced the windshield. I noticed waves in the lower right and lower left side. Once I noticed them, it really was annoying. The technician said the RL has a curve that makes this common. They did come back and replace it with another brand (not original) that was fine. Sorry can not remember the brand name of the last one. They stated the Acura windshield was twice as expensive and it would be a fight with my insurance company.

get the OEM glass. as far as i know acura's all have acoustic glass.
your best bet for OEM glass, look at the label on your windshield. there should be a branding badge like AP tech (they make the glass for the 3G TL), or pilkington or some other glass company along with either a Honda or Acura badge on it. there will be a series of numbers a what not including the DOT XXX and a few other "specs". it has been determined for the TL that AP tech OEM glass with the exact same specs minus the Honda/Acura badge can be had for the car. there is a thread on it. i recently had my windshield replaced on my TL, and specifically asked for the OEM aftermarket glass by AP Tech minus the Honda badge.
no issues so far (its been in for a week) and it is the exact same piece of glass.
safelite makes their own glass through reverse engineering and may not have the same quality standards as the OEM or factory glass. some have complained that the "OE" aftermarket glass (like safelite) is wavy or noisy (lack of acoustic barrier). be specific on what you want in your car.
the OEM glass is about 1/2 the price of the factory glass (its the same glass, but you pay double just to have the acura/honda badge on it). the "OE" aftermarket glass will be cheaper than the OEM glass (b/c it is cheap).
i hope this helps.

I have had two new windsheilds: the first was OEM from Acura and it was no problem. The second was recomended by my Ins Co and it's not Acura stamped and it is not as good. (minor distortions). If you have to pay the deductable anyway then try to get the Acura glass, I know I will next time.

factory glass will run around $8-900, OEM (exact same glass without honda/acura badge) is around $400, and safelite OE crap glass will be $200 or less.

see thread for badgeless OEM glass vs factory glass. same glass, for less money.
i just had mine done...specs all the same, no honda badge, no issues.

no, but my dad did...glass division. most of the info i've gathered from here on AZ and from my own research as i encounter issues with my own vehicles. in this case, new windshields. a little help from AZ and then some independent homework on glass replacement differences...i like to be thorough in my decision making processes when it comes to big tix items.

I had issues when mine was changed:
- the fitter dislodged the tubing that drains the moon roof and water leaked down inside the pillar into the car
- the same fitter broke the plasic retaining clips that hold the side trim in place on one side - with a result it kept lifting off at high speed. I have jammed it in with tape. I have the replacement parts now but am waiting for it to come apart again before I fit them
- With the glass out the second fitter showed me that the leading edge of the roof was rusting - the car was just over 3 years old at the time

Aaaagh! Gravel to the windshield and AAA wants to replace with Safelite glass. I remembered seeing this thread and that gave me some alarm bells.
So, is it PGP or AP Glass that makes the real OEM, just without the Acura logo on the lamisafe glass for the RL? Anyone with current info, or part numbers for the RL (as opposed to that TL thread)?

Don't skimp. Mine was replaced with good Honda glass but by an idiot. The side rails were never clipped down properly, the spray bar (Alang the base) is loose and the dash where it meets the bottom of the screen is not glued properly and is loose.
It's a trick job to do correctly. Your Acura stealer probably uses a separate contractor for the install. Ask them who and use that guy.

Need expertise and info
So, AAA will pay for an oem windshield, but not the dealer version. Now, the glass repair guy can't find one in San Diego.
Does anyone have the part numbers for the AP and/or the PPG windshields? The thread referenced above is for the TL.

asahi makes the glass for the RL. take a picture of your windshield badge (OEM codes for asahi). i'm not sure you can get asahi glass in the US. the US affiliate to asahi is AGC. find out from the glass installer if AGC glass is available and they "code share" with asahi glass (for OEM specs). AGC is the glass supplier to the 2G MDX and the i believe the 4G TL.
the RL was built in japan wasn't it? which would make sense that asahi makes the glass.
