Nav screen prompts

Nav screen prompts
I have “Please check your disk” displayed on my nav screen. I am unable to access any other functions like radio or climate. I live in Alaska and get no nav functions but I would sure like to control the climate and radio. Looks like from previous posts a battery disconnect might solve my issue but I am worried I won’t be able to reset my radio because I will just get the check your disk message and I’ll never get the radio reset prompt. Anyone know what will happen if I disconnect the battery? Another question I have if there is a way to override the nav screen to get to the radio and climate controls?
i have checked the disk and it looked very clean.
Any my help is appreciated!

Sounds like you might have a bad nav drive? I have my old nav disk sitting around, if you want to use it to test. I can send it to you for free, just pay me for the shipping and packaging.

Thank you that is kind. I might take you up on it after I get some advise on my options. I really want to find a way to bypass or override the nav so I can just control the heat and radio.

Hey, I had the exact same thing happen to me, and no, I don’t believe you can bypass that screen. The disk drive operates pretty much all functions for the radio, ac etc. I tired everything, but eventually I had to remove the disk drive from the trunk and send it directly to alpine in California for repair. Cost is around $400 plus shipping. Good luck!

Ha. I know, I think there’s another thred here somewhere that has a video on how to remove the disk drive and clean the laser reader with a qtip, but that also didn’t work for me. If you do wind up sending the disk drive to alpine, remove it yourself! Don’t bother with a dealer, they’ll charge you a couple hundred to do it for you on top of the $400.

So now I cant get the disk drive door to open. tried it with the car running and not running with the key on. Any suggestions? I'd like to take the disk out and try cleaning before I give up.

My nav screen is currently out as well. You can actually operate the A/C / heater and the radio without the navigation screen, you just can't do everything. You have to use the "Auto" button for the A/C / heater / defrost, and then use your temperature control buttons to adjust. It's not a perfect system, but it works. Same deal with the radio. Your channel buttons still work, and the seek/skip buttons. I was told to get mine worked on by a place here in town, and the guy said it would prob cost around $400.00 to clean and replace parts.

Yes you are right, not perfect but it works. I'm not sure I want to cough up the $400 to send to Alpine to fix. Maybe it's time for a newer car? I'm thinking about another RL about around 5-8 years old or maybe a small SUV. I'm thinking RDX or MDX or even a (dare I say it) Lexus RX or Forester. I know I'll miss the RL's handling and comfortable ride but I miss the space of the SUV.
