My key said it was not detected while driving...cannot find my key so I am thinking

Was driving 6 miles today. On the fifth mile the light saying my key was not detected. Had to drive one more mile to get off the road. When I turned off the car it will not start anymore and I cannot find the key. I called the dealership in Bakersfield and they said the car light will go off fifteen feet...so I walked the two mile stretch....no sign of the key. I had to drive four hour to get the other key and go back tomorrow to try to get my car....hopefully it will be there in one piece. Can you give me better information about this situation

More than likely the battery in the fob died.

Tip of the day: there's an actual key built into the fob that you can remove to start the car

As an aside, I believe the car will continue to run without the key fob detected until it is shut off. OP would have been fine if he/she continued to drive without turning off the engine.

@teh CL where or how would you use the key to start the car??

If you ever need to use it, there's a slot at the bottom of the ignition cap that the key slides into to pop the cap off. Once the cap is off, it's just like any other car.

I think folks responding here are missing the OP's point.

(emphasis added) He has lost his key. That's a whole lot different then the battery in the fob going out. He is going to need to get a new fob/key it sounds like to me.

^Glad someone else caught that too lol

OP did you actually loose the physical key, or are you using that more metaphorically as in the key lost it's connection?

I caught that fact too, but let's face it, the OP had the key to start the car before his 6 mile journey, right???

Thats why I was wondering if it’s more metaphorical use that he lost his key, and the fob is somewhere in the car with a dead battery? Because like you said it had to be there to start the car, unless he dropped off a passenger that has the key?

Those are both possibilities. I guess we just need to wait for OP to respond.

either way this goes if OP battery dies out simply because he ignore the message keep pop up in MID screen OR he might had some passenger carry the key away if this happened once the door closed you will get that beep and message "key not detected" pop up on the MID.

Either way OP was not paying attention to detail that much and YES you can still drive the car even WITHOUT the remote anywhere near the car, just don't turn your engine off.

This works with any smart keyless vehicle also you don't need the actual key to start engine its the remote that needed and they actually only use incase battery died or the car loss power.

UNLESS third scenario is some how OP wife/GF got mad and toss the remote out the window during driving which explain why the message does not appear right away.

For those that didn't know about the physical key hidden in the fob... If you use the physical key in the door lock of the driver's side, twist it left (as if to unlock the doors) twice but on the second twist, hold it there. All the windows will open. This can also be accomplished via the unlock button on the fob. Push twice and on the second push, hold it down while the windows open. Unfortunately, you must use the physical key to automatically close all the windows by twisting once to the right (as if to lock the doors) and hold it.
