low pitch moan at 45mph

Hello all, I've had this sound coming from what seems to be the front of my RL for about a year now. It's hard to describe the sound, maybe a low pitch rumble or moan that comes on for for about 2 seconds then off for the same time and repeats so long as I'm at a constant 43-46mph. Never going downhill but always on flat road or slight incline.
I thought it was plastic vibrating, like you see on some cars with a separate air dam underneath the front of the car.
Any ideas?

Sounds like your torque converter going in and out of lock-up...manually downshift into 4th gear at the same speed and see if it goes away.

Now that you guys have pointed out "torque converter lockup" as the possible issue, I searched it and found so many posts with the same symptoms. I'll contact acura and see what they come up with.
Thanks everyone!

it went away in 4th gear.
I took it to my dealership and asked them to look into it.

My 7 year 100K extended warranty ran out Oct 5th 2013. I explained to them that the "noise" started in spring of 2013(while under warranty) and it was my fault that I didn't bring it in last summer. I asked them if they could help with cost since it did develop within the 7 year period. Much to my surprise they covered 100% of the cost as good will gesture.

It helps to have a good working relationship with the dealer and a dealership that puts relationships as a top priority!

Mine does the same for the about the past year. A low groan at ~45mph and 1,500 - 2000 RPM's, but even at certain highway speeds where that's the RPM range. I've suspected the torque converter also, and it kept happening even after a 3x trans fluid swap. But I'm off warranty even when this started.

Very curious to hear what the dealer says and if they just default to replace the TC.

they probably just put a torque convertor in it which is common across most of the 05-10 acuras i think it was an issue with the build the new ones are from japan and they have different laws about materials and what not

You're right, I got my RL back yesterday and they did replace the torque converter. (part no. 26000-RJA-316).

As mentioned earlier, this dealership is very good with maintaining a good customer relationship.

Does the noise indicate an issue with the TC? Or is this just a "I don't like the sound" issue?

Good question, I'm sure someone with knowledge on this topic could shed some light for us all.

I've had the noise for about 2 years now and all seems to be well (tranny fluid draining cleaning when doing regular drain and fills). Just hoping its more of an annoyance than a more serious issue.

I have it in my 06 that I bought last summer. Out of warranty of course. I think it started at about 75000 miles. I'm due for a differential fluid change but sounds like that won't make it go away.

I had that problem before too. Took it in and had the transmission fluid flushed twice to make sure I got as much of the old fluid out as possible. It did the trick for me.
