Hopefully our SatNav won't stop working on April 6 !

https://forums.theregister.co.uk/for...ps_epoch_ends/

Every 20 years, the week number in the GPS protocol rolls over from 1023 to 0. Some devices can't handle this change - hopefully ours is not one of them !

I can't seem to edit that post, but the actual article link should be https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/0...ps_epoch_ends/

I absolutely still use mine. Our other car is a navigation-equipped Gen 3 Prius. Its system is so unintuitive as to be absolute unusable (as owners on their board constantly complain, so it's not just me). I gave my wife a Garmin so she could get around. I find it, too, is much less usable than the RL's system, which I'm pretty sure is from Alpine – a very well-regarded maker of aftermarket head units in their day.

If I couldn't use my nav anymore, I'd be both very disappointed and meaningfully crippled. I have a mobile, but I don't want to have the phone lying around or sticking out on an arm. Among other things, the presence of a piece of phone paraphernalia in my metro area makes you a smash-and-grab theft target. It'd be worth it to me to replace the entire nav unit with a modern one to regain built-in nav, but Acura integrated so many other functions into it that I'd bet it's impossible to do. (Anyone reading this who knows otherwise is invited to correct me...PLEASE.)

I certainly use mine. Those new ones that sync with the phone are annoying and seem cheap.

The Navigation is great on the car and buying a cheapo Android will ruin it.

I hope it won't happen to us like y2k. But if it does, Acura should do a firmware fix for this.

We definitely don't know if it will happen or not - nor whether the issue (if it exists) has been fixed in any later DVD firmware upgrades. We'll have to try to navigate on April 7 and see what happens !

I don't think this will affect the 2nd Gen RLs. This is mainly for units made in the 90's, and rare are cars with Navigation in that time.

As of the 2000's, more sophisticated units were installed in cars.

Also, it's only a timestamp issue. I don't think my nav uses time in any way. Unless i'm mistaken?

It will still work, it just will display a 20 year time difference if scheduling and/or other time related options are on the nav system, and use UTC, and uses 10 bit binary, like in the 90's.

Tomtom issued fixes and firmware upgrades. Any manufac affected would too.

The US models have this dealer visit schedule (Canadian models do not), does it affect that? I don't know. But even if it did, if Acura installed "legacy" nav system in the cars in 2005, well.......... shame

So, I don't think so.

Hope this doesn't happen, the nav is one of the best parts about the car! I think it works pretty good for its age. I like using it more than my phone. I've only really found it to be ineffective in areas with a lot of new roads.

I hated the nav on the car. The need to purchase updates, lack of rerouting capability, lack of alerts for police or traffic, pretty much useless compared to waze.

At least the updates only involve popping in a disk and don’t involve a 400$ trip to the dealer (read: my Lexus with hard drive based navigation)
