Fuel Economy: 29 Hwy, 20.7 City

That is what I got over the past week or so. I am averaging 25.4MPG combined. That is pretty damn good considering I am due for an oil change and the temps have only been in the low 70s. I have to conclude that the car is running well.

That is what we get from all of the driving we do. You will get better mileage depending up on what octane and what brand of fuel you put in. Going from AZ to TN in two round trips, the further east we went the lower the mileage. I suspect it had to do with the amount of alcohol in the gas. Run a couple bottles of Lucas injector cleaner through your system. I buy a quart and dose it out. by doing two tanks in a row then occasionally to keep the system clean. .

Did a quick check this morning on the MID and it shows only 18.8 is what I'm averaging. Pretty lame considering I have only used Shell premium fuel since getting the car, tires are properly inflated, and have been adding BG44 fuel treatment once a year for the last two years. What else can I do to increase that number?

Get a different car. If you drive exclusively highway with no stop/go traffic, you can probably get some crazy high number like 23-25. If you're mixed, 17-20 is the best you're going to get.

I get about 27mpg (8.7L/100km) with 80% highway driving on Costco 91 octane.

Get a different car you say... um no that's not gonna happen. It has been on my mind but not for this reason.

I do mostly highway miles with very little to no stop and go driving on a short commute to and from work. One thing that I did forget to check was my K&N air filter. Probably needs a cleaning and be oiled back up. With that said I should be least at 20.

A dirty K&N will allow your engine to return the same fuel economy as a clean K&N; just the same as an OEM filter, or for that matter, no filter at all.

While it was true once upon a time a dirty filter would reduce fuel economy, that was back in the days of carburetted engines; in this day and age of OBD-II controlled fuel injected system, your air to fuel ratio for any given driving environment will not change regardless of how restrictive, or not, your air filter is.

Every time I see someone post high numbers on the RL, I'm like "IMPOSIBRUHHH". But for real, not to sound cynical, but I really don't get how some people get such high numbers unless it's downhill both ways lol

Is the RL so much bigger/heavier than the TL it would impact fuel economy to such an extent? I ask because I typically get 28-29 mpg in my TL in mixed driving and more like 33 on the highway; I don't see any reason why the RL shouldn't get near that.

I believe the RL is quite a bit heavier than the TL. The driveline on the RL doesn't help much either unfortunately... Just a few launches at traffic lights delivers a noticeable drop in fuel economy...

I just checked, a 2006 RL will weight 529 pounds more than my 2006 TL 6MT (which works out to about 15% more weight); yeah, that's quite a bit of extra heft to be throwing around, especially in town.

Just a reminder some of the 06 RL come with CBMS/PAX which translate roughly to 4100 pounds and some change, like projektvertx its a combination between drive train and weight. SH-AWD is very complex system, if you launch the car from a dig its actually transfer power to the rear wheels first then slightly reduce the power and transfer back to the front (NO torque steer in the RL), if you lightly apply throttle the car is FWD only, moderate throttle the car is AWD and if you let off the gas without touch your brake the car is RWD, despite the soft suspension and being heavy the RL actually behave quite well in cornering. If you push the car in slow speed corner you will see understeer (common issue with AWD even with the help of SH-AWD), the gearing ratio is identical to my TL-S and alot of the tech that in 07-08 TL actually borrow from the RL. What I notice the RL stand out is the torque curve happen around 3500 RPM (do not get confuse with Vtec). I had a change running against a 2012 TL FWD and to my surprise I can actually keep up with it until 60 mph starting from a complete stop.

I got 15.8 - 16 MPG in city driving (Houston average light waiting time is 3 mins) during week day it take 2-3 red light so I can go through an intersection, A/C always on (auto mode). On the highway cruise at 75 MPH I got 26-27 MPG.

I'm thinking that sounds pretty reasonable for Houston traffic and for the open road for the RL.

I did a contract down in Houston back in the late 1980s, during the summer time, and I remember my first impression was, "Why is everybody driving with their wipers on even though it isn't raining?" Then as the condensation gradually built up on the outside of the windshield of my rental car I figured it out. Duh!

When I reset my trip meter (new tank of gas) and drive at a constant speed for several miles, I can also get >30mpg. Then I have to stop and the mpg goes back to reality.
