Does your RL have "Push Button Start" ?
I see that the 2011 TL's are now using the push button start, not sure what year they started using this and what year it would have been added to the Acura RL, any knowledge?
thanks,
thanks,

It's no-key, twist-knob start. This is a version of keyless starting with a more traditional feel.
I've never tried to kill the motor while in gear, so I don't know whether that would work if my throttle went all Toyota on me. Of course, shutting down my power brakes and power steering in such a case is not where I'd choose to go anyway. Hell, let's see what this baby will do...

No push buttons in RL's and I'm sure there is a chance a gen 3 model would have it but there is nothing to confirm that... and I would go to neutral before killing the car and losing power steering/brakes.

Like mentioned in the second post, it is essentially the same but with a knob to turn. This allows for a manually override with your actual key if the system fails. How does that work in a button car?

The new wrinkle here: the keyless, push-button start-and-stop systems in many vehicles. Owners need to be aware that these systems require a long press of the button to shut off power when the car is moving (so that an inadvertent touch of the button by the driver doesn’t kill the engine). Here, too, the Toyota was slightly behind the curve; the Infiniti’s engine shut down after a 2.5-second press of the button versus 3.3 seconds for the Camry. In an emergency, that would probably feel like an eternity. For some perspective, if a V-6 Camry’s throttle became stuck at 60 mph, the car would accelerate to nearly 80 mph before the engine would surrender. Furthermore, short, frantic pressing of the Toyota’s start/stop button—the probable response in an emergency—does nothing, whereas the Infiniti kills the engine after three rapid-fire presses.

I meant manually override the starting of the engine.

I think that the RL system is the best out there:
1- Fob in pocket or briefcase and you never need to use it physically.
2- The turn of the switch to start is very familiar to convention but with technology.
3- Momentary turn to start - you do not have to hold it in the start position.
4- The switch allows for key insertion for emergencies.
5- Together with door handle dimples it makes other car systems obsolete.
Although mine is an 05, I have never had a problem with the door handles or the keyless start system. I hope they use the same system on the next gen and do not try to copy some of the lesser systems like BMW, Infiniti etc..
