Induction Service - legit or a dealer rip off?

Had my car in for it's 30k service and the dealer recommended I change the transmission fluid and do an "induction service". I asked what the induction service consisted of and he said it was some kind of chemical they put into the gas tank and into the intake system that would clean off any deposits in the intake/fuel injectors.

he said it made the car run rich, which burned off the deposits, and then the tech had to hook it up to the computer and relearn idle, etc etc....

i have some lucas cleaner I can add to my gas tank... I've heard of seafoam but never tried it...this sounded slightly more involved than adding fuel tank cleaner, but he said nothign went into the engine oil, so it's not as thorough as doing a full seafoam treatment..

the service was $120. I opted NOT to do it, thinking it sounded more like a revenue generator than a legit service.

has anyone heard of this service and is it something I really need? i tend to think not...

Unless your RL is not performing correctly (poor MPG, noisy fuel injectors, rough idle, etc) I would pass.

$11 for some Techron in the auto store will likely do the same thing. I use it twice a year and my RL is as smooth and silent as new. Some who like more aggressive fuel system treatment use Sea Foam in the fuel system.

Dealers are making money in Service Departments, and need to compensate for lower new car sales. But if your RL is behaving properly, stick to the MID and Manual for recommended service.

can you guys go into detail on techron or seafoam treatments I would like to try but i hear mixed responses about seafoam. Techron seems like its just a fuel additive but would still like to know more about it.....

Techron is a simple fuel additive.

This is a thread with discussion using SeaFoam:

i've got some lucas gas treatment that i grabbed at pepboys...i'll put some in the tank next time I fill up. some of these standard gas additives do wonders...but you notice it more on higher mileage cars. i only have 32k miles on my RL.... i once put some in a Miata I had years ago that had about 75k miles on it...and after a tank of the stuff I could notice it ran slightly better...nothing drastic, but you could notice it was smoother....

i'll pass on the service. thanks for the suggestions.

i also use the techron in my cars about every 4k or so. Its just a little preventive maintainence.

I believe any fuel additive will be the same as long as it contains pfe or some similar acronym.

one of these days I'll take off my intake manifold to check if its been worth it.

i went to pickup my car today...the dealer DID this service..even though I told them not to.. the bill was obviously too high..I told the service advisor that we had talked and I had told them NOT to do the service...he was honest and recalled the conversation and said the tech had done it on accident..thinking it was approved... ended up getting it for FREE...no charge as I had no approved the service. not that I really think the car needed it...but I got it done for free..

Well now that you had it done anyway do you perceive any difference in performance.

i can't say it drives any better. if it does it is so minimal I can't tell.

they told me the induction service was more for gas mileage than power. I'll watch what kind of mileage I get next time I fill up.
