2005 RL Navigation Screen Scrolling

1 Attachment(s)
I am having an issue with my navigation screen, as it scrools making the screen difficult to read. I have done searches to no avail. I tested the DVD unit by removing the DVD from the navgation unit, but the screen continued to scrool. I then removed the navigation unit all together, which caused the navigation screen to turn black, as would be expected. I have attached a video of the scrooling screen, hopefully someone will be able to tell me what is going wrong.

Does it every actually load to the screen that prompts you to agree?

gogogoldrl 06-20-2017 07:13 AM

Yes, it goes through all of the steps while booting up and gets to the map screen, everything functions normally except for the rolling and scrolling screen. It was especially difficult to enter the code after I reinstalled the DVD unit.

I'm guessing bad screen since it's doing it at every single step

gogogoldrl 06-20-2017 12:03 PM

Thank you, that was my guess also, i'm leery about going to my local Acura dealer after my last bad experiance. they had my car for 2 weeks, replaced my starter without my authorization,
leaned on my 2 front fenders and dented them. and still never fixed the starting problem.
Anyone have any ideas on removing the nav screen, it's odd that I don't see many other nav screen problems.

Solomon Allen 06-22-2017 05:14 PM

The same thing happened to me, turns out it wasn't the screen but I replaced it anyways. The navigation unit in the trunk went bad and it costed me about $900 to fix

gogogoldrl 06-22-2017 09:43 PM

Thank you, for your reply, i've tried to test the DVD unit and it seems ok?
Do you or does anyone have any information on how to remove the nav screen, Alpine will repair it for $250.00.
I assume I need to remove the dash to get at the screen.
I've searched the steps and only see the TL screen removal.

If the navigation unit in the truck goes bad, it could be that the head is dirty that reads the DVD. Did you try cleaning that?
If that doesn't resolve it, then I would be looking for a wrecked car to buy the unit from. You might get lucky and get an updated disc. That would be a heck cheaper than $900. All else fails it is the screen that is gone bad not being able to hold the screen refresh rate. Like we used to have in our old b/w television sets....oh, now I am giving away my age. :D
You can download modules from the repair manual that will show you how to remove the unit from the center console. Just type in Acura RL repair manual and it will come up in a search.

gogogoldrl 07-07-2017 07:23 AM

I had an Acura tech swap out a known good DVD unit with my DVD unit and the screen output was clear, so I packed up my DVD unit and sent it to Alpine for the $ 358.00 repair.
I was toying with the idea of buying a 2006 unit and trying to add a rear view camera as some people have on the forum but any old unit I buy might be in the same shape as my current unit and I may need to have it rebuit in a short time as well.

don't worry buying an old unit, you still need the camera and harness going along with it, your best option is use navtool interface. I will be install that some time in the near future with phone mirror option.

i've been thinking about grabbing a Razberry pi or one of the equivilants to custom make a nav unit using Android.

gogogoldrl 07-07-2017 09:32 PM

Thanks, thats great information truonghtre, I haven't looked at navtool for a while because I rembered the price to be much highter than it is now it's a much better deal.
do you recall if the instllation can be done from the trunk or do you have to pull out the radio unit ?

I would say do it, because just in case your factory nav tool take a dump you can retain the factory look but keep the modern map looks.

OP
most of the installation is done in the trunk, unless you wanted the mirror phone option, even that the RL center console is pretty easy to access. I can remove the radio in 15 mins or less.

gogogoldrl 07-19-2017 05:42 PM

Well after about a 12 day turn around and $ 358.00 plus my shipping I have my Nav unit back and it seems to have fixed the problem. now I need to ck out the
NAV tools backup camera kit.

truonghthe 08-13-2017 01:04 AM

Could you share the phone number to contact Alpine? i mean it will be great help for future reference.

No acura has a navigation unit. What you see as navigation is 100 percent computer code. The touch screen is just that a touch screen, the touch screen also has nothing to do with the speed that the cars computer sends and receives information. So assuming that you can update the computer by updating the screen is as senseless as hoping to update a desktop computers speed by buying a new monitor.

Hey FRAN, just a pro tip, next time you are up late drinking remember to check the date on these.

This one is from 2017.

Date means nothing, when a fool purchases a nav package in a vehicle that already has a touchscreen all the dealer or factory does is load computer code that cost nothing once bought. Thus its 100 percent profit for the company.

Play on and enjoy your junk transmission
