2005 RL to 2018 TLX
Hello everyone,
I’m considering selling my 2005 rl with 159k and purchasing a used 2018 tlx v6 advance package. Does anyone have any experience going from a 2g rl to a tlx? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I've only driven a TLX as a loaner car but my guess is that the drive will be similar (worse if TLX is FWD only). The interior materials in TLX is worse than RL. But TLX will have modern infotainment stack. I would consider it an upgrade. Your RL won't fetch much on the used car market though so won't make much of a dent in the cost of that 2018 TLX.

Besides the new electronics, no major advantage rather a reduction in build quality.

I chalked that up to it being a class lower than the RL, but I guess I could chalk up the interior to that too. When I was shopping, I couldn't justify getting a 45K car (TLX AWD A-Spec) on a car that had the same motor as my RL, got an updated transmission and was somehow only 0.1 seconds quicker to 60 than my RL. Overall, I wasn't impressed with the TLX at all....

beside the new "tech" (duh its 13 years apart) and gas mileage, everything else in the TLX is consider down grade if you come from the 3g TL and 2g RL.
Pop the hood and you will see that "1 strut" along with all the cheap plastic on door panel and that dam dash (lazy in interior design department and cost cutting).
Every time I close the door its feels like my 99 Accord, I would rather drive my old RL over any of the TLX (yes even the Aspec), guys that work at the local Acura dealer always love my RL and TL despite being 11-12 years old.

If you invest $$$ into RL to take care of engine mounts and complete suspension, it will run better than TLX .... not to mention problems and issues that TLXs have. Practically they crammed v6 and shawd onto TSX platform base lil acura to feed the masses huge pile of $hit... VCM caused vibrations, no space as it is smaller car regardless what measurements say, who knows if the engine oil issue will be there because of vcm crap, should I even begin to say anything about crappy transmission?.... nah... don’t think you should do it.
TLX is not worth in my opinion, especially that a very close friend of mine has lost over 10Gs by picking up TLx that was plagued with problems... just to get rid of it he had to take a loss...
so you can tell I am no fan of TLX...

I saw a 2018 used tlx that caught my eye and it triggered the idea of switching to the tlx. After reading your replies, I will hang onto my RL. I purchashed the RL from a friend last December with 131k miles and I’m now at 159k. This is my first Acura and since the RL has been great in the short time I’ve owned it I thought the quality of the TLX would be no different. Again I appreciate all the feedback.
With the help of this forum I was able to do all the maintaince below myself minus the timing belt, water pump and alpine repair. Thanks again!
Timing belt
water pump
new serpentine belt
transmission fluid 3x3
rear differential and clutch assembly fluid.
transfer case fluid
front and rear struts
spark plugs
trunk disc player repaired by alpine
pvc valve
replaced glove box old one had the bubbles
not an ashtray and charger clips. would not close.

I drove a 2018 TLX Advanced SH-AWD for a couple days when my wife's MDX was getting some work done. The overwhelming technology and mpg was nice, but very disappointed in the driving fun factor. The 9-speed trans just ruined the rush of the VTEC that I enjoyed in our MDX and a previous '07 TL Type-S. The TLX was very "blah" to drive; no more Acura excitement that brought me to the brand. Other than SH-AWD, a 2018 Honda Accord Sport V6 is a better buy IMO. Keep the RL or if you want a bit more sport, find a MINT 2014 TL SH-AWD w/low miles from a state outside the rust belt and that is a fine and fun car. Oh, and don't even think about a 4-cylinder TLX.

The only exquisite upgrade one does when going from 3G TL to 2nd Gen RL is the quality of Ramblings.
Yuuuuge difference. Yuge.
