The 1,000,000 mile RL

My 8th grade science teacher drove a Volvo back in the early 60's and he really loved that car....and this was back when most people owned US made cars and imports were very exotic and unusual. The Germans and Japanese had barely begun their conquest of the US market.
When I returned to the NY area after college...got married...and went looking for a car I ran into him at a local Volvo dealership....we was the 250,000 mile Volvo man and loved talking about his Volvo. It became a second career for him.
Years later I think he became the 1,000,000 mile Volvo man....and when I went looking for a luxury sedan back a few years ago....bought a Volvo S80T6. I always had it serviced and maintained at the dealership....got the extended warranty....maybe I could to become the 1,000,000 mile Volvoman.
Well...right after the warranty expired at 100,000 miles....the timing belt went and the engine siezed up and I had to replace the motor or junk the car. I gave the car to my son....but that Volvo will never be the same...and just how did he get his Volvo to last 1,000,000 miles? It is/was a very nice car...but I don't think they make Volvos the way they used to.
Now I have my 2005 RL....got the extended warranty....hmmmm....how many miles can you get out of an Acura RL? The 1,000,000 mile Acuraman....sounds like a good job when I'm ready to retire down the road.

I just traded a 2001 Volvo S60 on my RL. With 74,000 miles the Volvo's transmission was shifting erratically and making metallic sounds when it did. The display screen indicated "Brake Failure - Service Urgent" on a number of occasions (usually whenmaking a right turn), not to mention the $1,000 plus repair to the Electronic Throttle Module (Google "Volvo ETM" to see the issue that Volvo was very aware of for years and is being investigated by the NHTSA for). Service at two of the three Volvo dealers I used stunk and while service at the third was good, they once changed my headlight bulbs "just in case" and tried to bill be close to $100 for it.

A Volvo is just another Ford now.

If you go for big miles on an RL, change oil frequently, do all maint but change tranny and diff fluid about every 15k.
It will be money well spent. Honda seems to have all their maint schedule set up fine except the tranny fluid. I change my own tranny fluid on my 3 Honda' ( Acura's) and my daughters Honda, the tranny fluid is bad at 15 to 30,000 miles, including lots of metal particles on the magnet drain plug. The fluid is very dark.

Was that Volvo a P1800...I remember very well reading articles about that particular car...that owner drove frequently up and down the East Coast, as I recall. My first car was a 1965 122S purchased in 1966...the owner was returning to law school at Alabama and had to give it up. His wife cried when she gave me the keys. I wasn't quite an adult and my father refused to co-sign the note, So, the insurance salesman at Sears (Allstate) had to co-sign for me to get the car...Daddy was old fashioned in the extreme...a college student didn't need a car. I drove the car until the mid-80's and parked it under a tree...put about 300,000 on it...will be a retirement project to fix up...if I ever retire.

I then owned two 240's...both were over 200,000 miles when I eventually totaled them. I never felt the same about those cars as I did the 122S. Also, the dealerships became more "Americanized" in their treatment of customers...the Volvo dealers I used in Alabama and Mississippi began charging exorbitantly for service. That's why I eventually ended up with a Honda in 1990...the service costs seemed to be controlled more by Honda than the individual dealers...and were reasonable and affordable...and the Hondas were better cars...I've probably bored everyone with my consistent posts about having 460,000 miles on my '94 Accord EX. Even with a professional vocation, I never felt that I could really afford to own a Volvo considering what the service was costing. ..with the 240's it was nothing for me to take the car in and have a bill in excess of $1,000. I don't know what Volvo is doing today...some of their cars don't have good reports at CU.

As for the Acura going that 1,000,000 distance...well, cars are so much more complicated now...hard to say. I could do most of the maintenance on my 122S myself...still can hear the motor responding to my SU adjustments! I always had the Volvo dealer do the major stuff, and I always had the timing belt replaced!!

My cousins had an acura Legend at 240K when they got rid of it and last I heard its still running with its new owner. They currently have another legend with about 170K and it runs like a champ.

There is this toyota dealership here in Charlotte that is so sure toyotas last forever that have unlimated mileage/time powertrain warrantys. If I was in the market for a new car I would diffenently have to check that out.
