'05 rl keyless remote programming

Go Big Blue!
Can't do it on your own. You'll need to bring it to Acura so they can program it. Remember ,this is not just a remote that opens doors. It starts the car also. It must be plugged into special equipment, otherwise, anyone with an RL could drive away with anyone elses RL. Think about it.

Programming the Transmitter
• You must complete steps 1-6 within 4 seconds of the previous step to keep the system from exiting the programming mode.
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Press the “Lock” or “Unlock” button on one of the transmitters. (An unprogrammed transmitter can be used for this step.)
3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
4. Repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 two more times. Use the same transmitter used in step 2.
5. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
6. Press the “Lock” or “Unlock” button on the same transmitter. Make sure the power door locks cycle to confirm that the system is in programming mode.
7. Within 10 seconds, press the “Lock” or “Unlock” button on each transmitter, including the one used to enter the programming mode. Make sure the power door locks cycle after you press each transmitter button to confirm that the system accepted the transmitter’s code.
8. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0) to exit the programming mode.

I could be wrong, but aren't those instructions for just lock/unlock doors with the remote? Would that resolve the keyless portion of it? You cannot twist the ignition switch without the car recognizing a keyfob or with the key in the ignition.

remotes come separate from the key (which is part number 35111sja305)
the key goes into the remote and that is what is recognized by the car's system to allow it to start the ignition.
in another thread, we already told him that the key needs to be purchased and programmed by the dealer or locksmith.....
it's a 2 step process.
1 buy a real rl key, get it cut and programmed.
2 program the remotes that he bought off ebay.

Key fob programming
You need to be careful with this fob programing. My dealer cut me a new key and then got it stuck in the ignition before it was programed. It immobilized the car for 4 days as they had to order all new locks and rekey the whole car! All under warranty thankfully.

In my 06 RL FOB there is a KEY, and if you buy a used FOB on Ebay you will then have to buy a key from Acura and have the key cut and programmed as there is an immobilizer circuit in the key as well as the FOB. Therefore they go together in the reprograming project

Old thread but I need to clear it up so other people don't get confused like I did.
NYCTL is absolutely correct. GrebRL, although with good intentions, is mistaken. There is no immobilizer circuit in the FOB. I bought a "Driver1" (it really doesn't matter you can use two Driver2s) FOB on Ebay to replace my old broken FOB.
I have the original Driver1 key, and my Driver2 KEY/FOB pair. I was able to successfully program the "new" FOB and end the process by syncing my original Driver2 FOB at the end within the 10 second time frame.
Car locks and unlocks and starts with Driver1 memory management like it should. You do not need to reprogram you existing KEY(s) and you definitely do not need a new key if you have your originals.

fafpak,
So if I don't have the driver 1 key/fob, I can buy a fob on ebay and follow NYCTL instruction. Is that correct or do I still need to buy the key from the dealer also? I bought my RL with only driver 2 key/fob. Can't see the pictures from NYCTL instruction. Thanks

Well my sincere apologies for claiming GrebRL to be mistaken. Now that I think about it GrebRL must be spot, since valets are supposed to be able to use the fob without a key.
After sitting for 5 hours, the RL wont crank with the Driver1 key/fob pair. The fob shows a solid red light when I try to twist the (locked) ignition knob. It still opens the car but it seems that whatever was stored for the ignition has been lost from the pairing I did earlier.
JJ looks like you may need to visit the dealer for both key/fob purchase and programming. I know I definitely have to go to them for the latter now.

can anyone clarify this for me?
I have the original driver 1 key fob that works 100%.
I bought a used driver 2 fob with key from Ebay.
I programmed it to lock/unlock/panic/open trunk BUT it will not work to start the car.
So is there a way to program it to start the car or do I need to take it to the dealer?
I do not have an original driver 2 fob Key so I can't just pop out my old key.
Does the KEY actually have to be programmed as well?
I really do not care about getting another key cut if I don't have to as I never use the actual key anyways. But if I have to I guess I will.
From what I am reading I think I did the first half but I need to get a key cut and programmed elsewhere?

There is a chip in the key that has to be programmed to start the car (or the car programmed to work with that chip)

Just a new key is $90 + $55 for programming. I don't really need the key as I never use it. I just need the car to be able to start with the fob.
I called a local locksmith and they said they could probably reprogram the used key to work with my car for $45.
Just wondering if I could do it myself.

cannot do it yourself - need Dealer
I can't see local locksmith having the right equipment

^This. You need a Honda HDS tool to program the key chip to the keyless access module.

Programming can only be done at an Acura dealer. I took it to the Honda dealer to save a few dollars, but they were unable to do it. They told me that Acura has a special program that Honda dealers do not.

Reviving a slightly older thread with a quick question. If I have both fobs and their respective keys can I just buy newer fobs and reprogram with the above instructions for the unlock and lock etc slip the original cut keys into the newer key and be done? As in not have to rely on dealer for any programming?
The key fobs are pretty beat up that I am getting with the car.

No. The physical key and the fob both have RFID chips that need to be programmed to the car via an HDS tool.

Im writing on this thread because I recently purchased a used 2008 RL with only one key...I recently purchased a fob and uncut key (I have Driver 1, purchased Driver 2) and my local dealer wants $110 to program and cut...where else should I look? Nearest other dealer is too far from me...

That seems about right.

heres my deal really weird, i got my 2005 acura rl about 3 years ago and only recieved one key with it no fobs at all also had a burnt door handle so after i fixed the door handle problem i ordered a used driver 1 key fob from ebay with a used key that was going to be useless but w/e it came with it so i did the self program for lock unlock features used it like that for a while then finally wanted the door handle antennas to work and the keyless start also so i took it in to the dealer and had them check it out they came back to me and said that my immobilizer was bad and that they couldnt do anything at that time because the immobilizer unit was backorderd so i said ok thanks for the free car wash and left, later that day i went up to the car touched the handle and it unlocked on its own so i was like cool!!! so i jumped in and try to turn it on without putting the key in the ignition and it turns on ACC but when try to turn on it just cranks so the theft system is still activated im guessing. but my question is if my immobilizer is bad why would it let me turn the ignition all the way to ACC? can dealer be wrong and didnt program correctly?

There is such a thing as a partially programmed fob. I don't know if that explains your issue though.

let me pose a different question to you all:
I have an 08 RL
I lost my only key/Keyfob for driver 1, thats it, nothing to get into my car.
I ordered a replacement off Ebay /w a blank key included.
I went to Acura...they cut the key for me (nice guys) because i have my vin number.
Now the new cut key does this:
-gets me into the car
-fits in the ignition
-allows me to turn the ignition all the way to position 3
-car cranks
-car wont start (like fuel isnt getting to the engine)
Car was working fine before I lost my key/keyfob a week ago.
Is this is a key/keyfob problem? or is something now wrong with my car. Do i need to order an original "master key" from acura?
Ideas / suggestions appreciated.
I Havent tried programming the fob yet (I dont wanna get into all that until i know im gonna hose up the whole car now)

This sounds like your key is physically matched to your car, but the chip inside needs to be programmed. Without that programming, you would be physically able to turn the ignition all the way on, but the electrical side is kept off due to the unprogrammed chip in the key (technically the car needs to be programmed to auth against the static chip in the key)...

There is an RFID chip in the plastic base of the physical key. You need this to be programed to your car to unlock the immobilizer. The dealer should have known this.

Im pretty irritated at this point. I dont need a 3000$ security system that costs me 3000$ every time I lose a key.

You need the Honda diagnostic tool. Go to a dealer. They will charge you about $100 to program the chip and fob. A Honda dealer CAN do it, but they may not have any clue how to.
