I have an 06 RL with 95k miles, I average 17-19 city and 26 highway.. I inflate my tires to 38psi, just changed out all my fluids and spark plugs that helped the mileage a bit. I use to have a TL, That got 5mpg better than the RL but the RL is a tank! I love driving it, It's definitely worth the MPG difference in my opinion. Gas is cheap, I guess I won't be saying that when it goes back up to $5 a gallon in CA hahah

I get about 14 city, 27 highway, and I think that's pretty typical.

You're pushing over 4,000 pounds with 290 horsepower and full-time four-wheel drive, using 2004 technology. In highway cruising, the car's good aerodynamics and a low cruising enging RPM keep the miles per gallon reasonable. In stop-and-go, you pay the price for the car's exceptional combination of luxury and understeer-free all-weather performance. It's all part of the deal.

"Depending on how I drive" is the key part. Repeatedly push the center button and you'll find there are two trip odometers. If you want to see a long-term average, leave one of them alone. Reset the other one at the start of a highway trip, and at the end you'll see what kind of highway mileage you're getting. Ditto for in-town. You'll find the spread is pretty wide.

I get about 18-19 MPG average on my 06 RL. I drive about half city, half highway. The RL is quite a heavy car. I have trip A on auto-reset and trip B is never reset.

While that is an excellent plan to improve fuel economy, it makes for a very boring drive........ I got the car for fun and comfort, not economy....

ok so I tried driving different ways and still get crap gas mileage

what can cause this gas mileage?

are there common problems with this motor?

so far I have done:
new battery
balanced and rotated wheels with properly inflated tires
did the 3x3 transmission flush with redline
oil change
adjusted valves
ran tests with autel maxidas shop scanner no codes

theres gotta be an explanation for such a major difference between city and hwy mileage

Presume you are using premium fuel?

i average 22 in suburban driving and typically average 26-28, maybe even higher, on the highway. I use a k&n air filter too, but not sure that helps. Have you cleaned your air filter?

maybe run a bottle or two of techron thought the car. I typically put a bottle in every year.

I'm honestly happy if I average 20 mpg combined with about 50% city/highway. I remember filling up and sitting in stop and go traffic for 2 hours where I hit 3rd gear maybe once, and my MID said I averaged 13.2 mpg when I got to my destination. Bad city numbers real don't phase me anymore... Full time AWD with a 5000 lbs car will do that to you.

The 4matic system is RWD until it slips... That's the problem with these full time AWD cars, they will drain your wallet in the city.

I'll accept that something may be off with your car however... When was the timing belt done on the car? Spark plugs? What kind of tires are you running? I noticed a drop in mpg when I switched to Michelin Pilot Super Sports...

These area all smart service moves. Congratulations on making them.

But there are no miracle cures for the low city MPG of this car. Re-read my 10/23/16 post.

What MPG are you actually getting, and how do you drive? 14 MPG in the city is not uncommon for the RL as Tony and others said. You have an extra 15-20% drivetrain loss compared to FWD or RWD, and the car weighs over 2 tons without you or gas in it. If you are going over 3k RPM in the RL in city driving, your MPG is toast. It's just part of the ownership.
