A-019: How To: RL ECU Reflash/Tune

after seeing the turbo RL in another thread i emailed R2Racing to see how he tuned the RL
and to my surprise he shared alot of info with me. and didnt ask for money

i asked hondata and k-pro. they claimed theres no way to tune the 2004 ecu period its impossible. i have to buy their product blah blah get locked into a single ecu.
the nice thing: about hondata and k-pro. they are both real time programmers
the bad thing: they essentially use tactrix hardware which is open for all cars and license their software for a single ecu
which is ok if you re a baller and own multiple hondas and can afford a k-pro for each one
for everyone else its probably way out of budget and they dont even support RL or 04-06 tsx

heres what the guy shared with me
tactrix hardware to communicate with ecu
the K-line or CAN PCM flasher software and dongle -to read the stock rom from ecu and write it after modifying
all K-Line ECUs can not be read with PCM Flasher, only can be written with checksum calculation. All CAN latest ECUs can be read/write/chcksum.
WinOls is the software to modify ROM file palmer logger is to datalog
To read stock file you can use another hardware, such as Piasini BDM

k-line is the early ecus like 2004-2005 RL and tsx that hondata and k-pro say they cant be reflashed

he also has a collection of stock roms for what seems to be most of the honda cars

i would also suggest not to email him asking "how do i tune my RL etc" since you will get same reply that i just posted here
if you have a question post here and i will email him or maybe he is already on this forum i invited him but not sure if he joined yet
( not that im trying to have a monopoly on this or anything , just so people dont email him asking same thing and he stops responding completely)

finally got tactrix
end of the month will be buying the pcm flash and looking for the rest of the software and basemaps

if anyone wants to share any info don't be shy. and don't wait for me to do everything lol
i shared all the info needed to start you with the reflash.. if youre familiar with basic map editing the tools are all listed and I will have the stock bin file available for 2005 rl soon

I have no info to contribute (as you probably guessed lol), but I do feel you've put A LOT of work into this topic. While I can't be of help, I'll sticky your thread to the garage. Definitely like where your mind' at here.

this is all new to me also so I'm searching for articles or anything to help me understand the whole process of obd2 tuning.
I am familiar with obd1 Honda tuning crome hondata and Neptune or anything else related to b series so you can ask me questons if you own a b series glad to help
but if you find any good info online. can post it here to read.
I want to get the RL tuned like yesterday lol but I'm not baller so have to wait to buy each component

obd2 port hardware:
tactrix is having a sale right now on their webpage for 169$ while on ebay its 220$
bit writer software:
PCMflasher you can get from the developer on ebay "r_2_racing" which is the shop that did the turbo legend kb1 that was posted on here recently
which is also the guy who shared all the information with me about the tools needed. I would suggest buying from him as a way to thank him for his help
MAP EDITORS:
BitEdit is available from Chip-tuning
WinOls is available from their webpage also it is the best out there but it needs more knowledge as you would be creating the map packs manually or buy a mappack that already has maps created for your application. which are also available from R2racing for 200 per mappack
ECM titanium is another option fro map editor which some people like it is supposedly more noob friendly but once you learn how to do it people switch to Winols because its a much better program for professionals.

PCM flasher is a dongle software protection plus whichever module you need in our case either k line for early model RL or can-bus for later models

So if I'm understanding this, you need to dongle, the module and the software with the serial files? Or am I reading this wrong?

the dongle is just a hardware license key for the pcm flasher

from what i understand myself you need these minimum to reflash
tactrix
pcm flasher
and one of the map editors like winols bit edit or ecm titanium
and then if you want to datalog theres another software you can use
but i think tactrix itself has a datalog ability and can interface with a wideband. i have to check on that though

i might not be able to buy the software in the near future due to me spending money somwhere else.

so dont wait for me to do this

i do have the stock files for the 05 rl and 04 tsx if anyone interested in continuing this while i take care of some other stuff

you need tactrix
pcm flasher
and bit edit.. bit edit is specifically designed for this and easier to use than win ols.
it already has mapped out file for honda so you dont have to create fuel maps and find the options

im going through a divorce at the moment so i im saving money for other things currently

it will be few months before i can buy the parts

this guy been doing it for a while now
h t t p://w w w. r2racing.ru/chip-tyuning/chip-tyuning-acura

i will upload the files he shared with me in a bit for everyone to use
i talk to him and he gave me alot of information which i shared here already
he sells tuned files that you can load. but they re few 100 bucks each which is reasonable for a tuned file ready to use
he also has stock bin files for pretty much any car that you can purchase from him some of them are free some are not

but yea its about 1000 bucks but with this you are not locked to one ecu and you can use it to tune pretty much any 2004 and up honda depending on which system you get
win ols is very powerful and seems like the best bin editor but its more expensive and requires coding skills
bit edit is made specifically for honda and every other car brand with specific software package
check on ecu tools webpage they have some images of the interface whic to me looks very similar to crome lol

well I didn't crack it lol I'm just really good at finding information on the interwebs
the guys at ecutools are the ones who cracked it

apparently tactrix is NOT working on the rl and tsx support software because they are a very small (2 person) company and they are working on support for other cars

so if maybe more people email them and see how we can help get what we need they seem to be willing to do it

seems like its a manpower issue for them someone with coding skills maybe able to help too bad they moved from seattle to California otherwise I would just drive there and stalk them in person lol to see if they need any help
Im also very curious to see what comes out of it. I mean its already been done by the shop above he said he tuned 3 or 4 RL s total and plenty of other j series with shawd system without issues
so I know it works I just don't know how user friendly it is.

you can download winols for free and use it. you just have to map the file from the beginning and you need to know binary for that.

planning to order the rest of the kit in a few days
maybe check on monday to see if they have deals cyber monday

this is complete package for 2005 RL specifically
04-05 tsx has keihin ecu K-line
06 tsx has matsushita ecu K-line
07-08 tsx has matsushita ecu can bus
09-up tsx has keihin ecu
09-up tl sh awd has continental ecu
08-up RL has keihin ecu but its CAN BUS not k line so you need module #12 for CAN bus systems( its actually cheaper to buy both 12 and 13 module together)
tactrix hardware anywhere from 60-180 depends if used or new.
PCM flash dongle with module 13 (k-line) $166
BitEdit dongle with Honda Keihin ecu module $628

heres google image search for bit edit to give you some idea of what interface you will be working with
https://www.google.com/search?biw=16...=1511665827082

I liked the RL because it limits me on how much money I could dump into performance. You're making it hard now haha

now looking for a datalogging solution seems to be even bigger headache.
if anyone sees anything that could potentially work please post a link

im looking at some dongles that datalog but they re not real time data
my other option is to install a sensor on each bank one at a time and run it with plx wideband setup that i belive have some kind of datalogging

the car has 2 oem widebands but so far its been hard to find a way to interface them
and also if anyone is willing to "donate" parts like cat delete or even old busted cat assembly so i can take it to local weld shop and weld a pipe on it
im also considering the newer j series heads with dual vtec + intake manifold if anyone has it for sale so i can port the head and intake manifold
i want to make this car fast so people start respecting it so RL is not associated with failed honda design anymore
i found some lightweight rims for it but need to sell my a-spec and the other set that i have.
later on its gonna go on a diet to at least drop the weight below 4000lbs lol
also going to see if theres a transmission shop that builds custom torque converters like they do for earlier TL with j32

would be soo cool if i could use the 6 speed transmission from tl sh-awd in the RL
that would be a great sleeper

btw i belive he also mentioned that he can reflash your ecu
so theres no need to buy the tuning kit if you just want a reflash
he speaks english and should be able to help you if you want a reflash since he seems to have tuned quiet a few of the j series and RLs specifically
im somewhat broke now and have another toy to spend money on( s2000) so the RL is on pause right now since i have no need to tune it as i never actually bought any aftermarket upgrades lol

i kinda have it backwards now
s2k is my daily
and RL is more of a race car "build"
the bottleneck for me is not being able to remove the stock sound system that weighs a ton to replace it with an indash

i mean, depending on where you live, that may not be a bad way to do it lol. If it’s decent weather, S2K it year round!
