I am about to change the transfer case fluid. I bought a quart of Honda Hypoid gear oil. I noticed after I bought it that it is rated for 75w-85 not 80w-90. It is GL-5 rated so I assume it is ok to use but I wanted to ask first.

I'm currently using the new Honda HGO and I haven't had any issues. I saw somewhere it was recommended for the pilot and I think every Honda vehicle with a transfer case.

Unless you are going to tow something across the desert, I think you will be fine.

Thanks! I assumed it was fine but I wanted to make sure first. I live in RI and don't tow anything. I know fluids change over time. The transmission fluid has changed since the second generation RL was released and it can no longer be used in the rear differential. I wanted to make sure that wasn't the case with the transfer fluid. Always best to ask before using a fluid that may damage an expensive part.

Atf and diff oils

So I bought this 05 rl with 59,300 and last mayor service done at 57,648 May 2014 at dealer. Water pump timing belt, atf (atz-z1), cabin air filter. No differential though. So I want to change all oils again. No more Z1 can I just use DW 1? and Acura DPSF for rear diff? There's only a rear diff on this vehicle right?

Looking at the receipt I missed rear diff oil change. It was indeed done as well. Part # 08200-9007A. The receipt says customer said car wasn't driven for a year before the May 2, 2014 service. Should I go ahead anyway and do them again or wait?

The fluids are as follows:

Front differential: 80W-90
Rear Differential: 2 chambers adding up to about 4.5 quarts of Acura DPSF (All Wheel Drive Fluid)
Transmission: ATF-DW1. I've been told you can swap this one and this one only for the Honda version of ATF

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your quick response Projek.
It seems like they used Honda Dual Pump Fluid II 08200-9007A instead of DPSF. Is this bad or good? I'm reading that they are interchangeable?

So rear diff has 2 chambers that we must use Honda fluid? And front transfer case in front of car 80w-90 can use any make oil?

The rear diff has two chambers that you should use the Acura fluid. I believe the Honda fluid is NOT equivalent for the rear diff application. The front diff, any 80W-90 fluid can be used. For the ATF, the conclusion was that Honda and Acura fluid were the same.

I thought I put a thread about it in the Garage, as it turns out I did. By popular demand, I'll sticky that one at the top

No worries, I've been trying to update the garage to reflect what's been going on these last few years with the car as more and more people start to work on it.

For those of you that aren't aware, Idemitsu Type H is the same thing as the old Honda/Acura Z-1 and it's all over eBay. A 3X drain and fill with 500 miles in between changes will get 99% of the old ATF out and the dealer has a procedure to do it on a lift. DO NOT use any type of commercial transmission flush on these transmissions. In a pinch, Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic Dextron/Mercon III ATF is an acceptable substitute. Also, I am told by an excellent Acura technician that I trust that Acura AWD fluid and Honda DPSF are one and the same. In fact, he showed me the stock number for each and they are identical except the Honda version has a "H" in the stock number and the Acura has an "A".

In short, 4 quarts of Type H/DW-1, 4 quarts of Acura AWD/Honda DPSF and a quart of 75W-90/80W-90 synthetic gear oil (I prefer Mobil 1) and you are good to go.

Is there anyone in either Philly, Delaware. Maryland or South Jersey, that does all these fluids? I don't want to go to the dealer or do myself. Any recommendations? Thanks fellas.

Is it ok to substitute Acura fluids with the following fluids:

Automatic Transmission and Rear Differential: Aisin DW-1
Rear Differential: SuperTech 80w-90 or SuperTech Synthetic 75W-90

I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to Honda transmissions and the rear diff, I use OEM fluid only. As far as the front diff goes, any brand that matches OEM weight works. I’ve seen people switch to 75W90 but I can’t speak to it.

There's a few posts in the middle of this thread about using a jack to raise the car for fluid changes.

If you go this route, note that the car needs to be level ! ie, you'll need 4 * jack stands, and the entire car off the ground...

I use two rows of timber sleepers on my driveway, and just drive the car up onto them. Much quicker and easier if you're doing a job that doesn't need the wheels removing.

The best way to fill ATF fluid and this pump and vinyl tube costed me $18 total. It fits the dipstick perfect!

I live in Argentina and the car is branded Honda rather than Acura. I went to the Honda dealer for an ATF and Rear diff fluid change at 66k miles. They charged me 7 QT/bottles of ATF-DW-1. A couple of questions arises:

1) Is ATF-DW-1 fine for the Rear Diff? ATF-DW-1 replaces ATF-Z1 and, in theory, should be good. But Im not sure if they are the same fluid. Maybe not. Has Acura/Honda officially published a bulletin replacing ATF-Z1 for Acura AWD DPSF for Rear diffs? I've not seen any official statement and I don't think I can make an argument at the dealership that they did the wrong job.
2) I've just saw the video posted above. The guy is super convinced the ATF-Z1 replacement is a no-go. I'm super worried.

No ATF-DW1 is NOT ok for the rear differential of RL/Legend. It’s possible they just wrote it up as 7 quarts of ATF if it’s the same price as DPSF at that dealer. Usually DPSF is more expensive than atf though. I would at least question the service advisor on it as a dealer should NOT make that mistake under any circumstance.
