A-002: Propeller Shaft (Whine) & Differential (Whir)

Well, historically when a bearing fails there is excessive heat which causes grease to break down. That can be seen visually as a warning.
Then the noise will increase with the friction, which will be an audible warning.
Then when it finally lets go, based on this drawing I would suspect that the shaft would seize and not detonate.
Which if that is anything like when my rear end locked up the car will default into FWD mode. The alternative is that the shaft keeps spinning and wedges itself into the brace which could cause some carnage.

That's comforting

I hear ya. I just want mine to last until the RLX is available. Would hate to have a major repair in the meantime (knocking on wood)
#208
So just got my car back, the shaft was replaced, the shaft plus labor ran about $2,300.00. So far I do not hear the radio noise any more. I will test some more tomorrow morning because that's when I hear it most.

I heard it this morning, not that big of a deal. I hear it under load. Don't know if my extended warranty will cover something that just makes noise. It probably won't fail, a lot of parts become noisy sometimes. I had a 98 ford pickup that developed a differential whine at 55k miles and it never failed. It still whines today and the truck has 150K miles.
Why did they replace the entire shaft? Isn't it just a bearing? Geez, dealers, they just change parts, no diagnosis. The problem is they'll expect you to pay for that method of repair with a straight face.

the design is such that the whole shaft has to be replaced
I think it is described somewhere earlier in this very long thread

Me too - I am still testing it around and it seems the whine noise is escalating to the other speeds as well but most heard is around 55mph...

This is kinda funny, you guys are so used to a quiet car. You notice everything! I used to be like that years ago when I drove a Dodge Stealth (a Japanese car, mind you) I know someone who moved here a few years ago from the Phillipines. She had never driven a car before she moved here. She learned on and drove for a few years a Lexus ES300, a very quiet and smooth car like ours. Well now she is temporarily driving my old 02 Mazda 626, which is in perfect working order and makes no noises it should not, and she is afraid of it and thinks the car is coming apart! That car is a fine driver, best condition for it's age, but compared to a Lexus or Acura, it's very rough I guess.

Got my car back over the weekend, and the noise in my car still exists. I think I may have a different noise than most others because mine is apparent at all times when the car is moving faster than ~15mph...
Regardless, the dealership replaced the propeller shaft and rear wheel bearings under warranty. But still, the noise exists and it bothers the hell out of me! I think its related to the tires though.

Been thinking about this now for a while. I think I'm going to ride it out. There's no new car out there that really excites me and a newer used RL just doesn't bring much to the table over what I've got now.
I figure what I would pay in sales tax for an interim solution would pay for the shaft replacement if it goes.

I'm going to get my car checked out tomorrow morning. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Hopefully the car will replicate the noise when the service guy gets in the car. As of now I feel like I have the whining noise at all speeds above 30-35 mph.
#219
They gave me a TSX as a loaner, which I can't stand on the highway and want my RL back ASAP! Not that bad inside, leather, navi, etc, but its no RL!

You guys should specifically start requesting RLX loaners when you schedule service... If you hint you maybe interested in trading in you might get one.
Congrats on the service tisucka

What did the dealer come up with as a fix? My RL is still having a whirring noise and my dealer is starting to become a pain. I've had the driveshaft and rear wheel bearings replaced under warranty, and then their service department said it was the wheels, so I replaced those with some Conti Extremecontact DWS', yet the noise still pervades...

You know, my noise exists at a much wider speed range as well. If it gets real loud my extended warranty should cover it as a failure. They knew what kind of car it was when I bought the warranty. Last time with my Honda I only got about $350 back of the $900 I spent(which is also a good thing). This time it was $1000 because I opted for more option coverage but it still wont cover all the fancy systems and nav and stuff. They had one for that, but it expired in 12 months! Point is, I think I'l get my money back this time. And if I don't, then that says a lot about the car.

I have a 2010 TL SH-AWD 6 speed manual that gives me the same whine at exactly 70-75mph only in 6th gear. Dealer replaced the propeller shaft but it still makes the sound. Any thoughts?

If you are under warranty, keep going back.
Otherwise, your 4gTL people are in this area: https://acurazine.com/forums/4g-tl-2009-2014-123/

And this thread is back....
Got my '05 about a month ago and it has 52k miles. (Private party and I'm the 3rd owner.) Unfortunately, I didn't notice the 70 mph whine during the test drive, but now it's been kind of bugging me. As others have experienced, it's only at speeds of around 65-75mph and only when my foot is lightly on the gas.
After looking at the service record book I noticed that the propeller shaft was replaced (under warranty) at about 35k miles. So, add me to that list. I don't know the *exact* issue/sound that my original owner had it repaired for, but we can guess it was something like this. Maybe the new shaft was quiet for a while, maybe it never fixed it and they told him "they all do that".....who knows, but I have noise now. I may contact the dealer to see if I can get the details at least.
Like all others who are out of warranty, I'll just turn up the tunes and Pretty bummed though....probably wouldn't have bought the car if I noticed and read this thread. BTW- temperature, heating up, etc. don't affect my noise at all. It's just what I stated in the beginning, all the time. I'm in California where it's not cold around this time of year.

Just an update, my issue ended up bearing in the transmission.....this lasted about 6 weeks, then the bearing blew apart and destroyed the inside of the transmission. I replaced the tranny and the noise is gone.
So here's my take: If it's confirmed not the propeller shaft, and you hear it in the tranny (listening to it on a lift), then your transmission days are numbered - guaranteed.

Wow, that's got to be a rare failure. I still have my extended warranty till next March. It just paid for a new alternator and 2 motor mounts, got my money's worth with just that $1200 bill. What did a tranny cost? I would think and engine or tranny in this car would end it's life due to cost. I am considering rewewing my extended warranty, if it's available to me.

$3000.00 for the new tranny all in. But a CPO was $30K and I had just done a good amount of maintenance on the car. I expect to be able to run this thing now to about 280K miles before junking it. I have 193K miles now....

Add me to the list of people with the whine. I get it around 30-35 mph. It's unfortunate that this also has to be my first post as I bought the car about 2 weeks ago. It's winter here, I hear it everyday for a short period and after driving maybe a minute or two it goes away. I also recorded a video of the sound as to maybe help differentiate the sounds people are hearing. I'm pretty convinced, this is the bearing noise. Prior to purchasing one of these I knew buying an extended warranty would not be an option for all of the things that COULD possibly go wrong...so I do have that. I guess I now need to read my contract further, as I seem to recall seeing something about noises maybe not being covered. I currently have 81k on my 2006. I love this car, I really don't want to not love it.
Will update.

I just got a new RL to me, its an 08 with a lot of miles. Long story short it has the noise that is on the video. Does the Propellor Shaft need to be replaced? Also is there any harm if not replaced? I am going to call the dealership that the car was taken to for work to see what they can tell me.

2020 Acura RLX Advance

I had a 2006 RL I purchased in 2008 with just 4k miles. I had the drive shaft replaced under CPO warranty for whine around 96k miles. Sold the car in 2011 with 173k on it
I am looking at low mileage 2012 RL's. Is the propeller shaft an issue only up to certain years? Or have there been issues also with the 2011 and 2012's?
I am hoping Acura made an engineering change in later years.
I run 35k-40k miles annually on my cars so this is a concern. I do not like the new RLX or TLX and I hear there are oil consumption issues on the new Accord V6 with VCM. The RL appears to be one of the last almost bullet proof Japanese tanks.
