Replaced our 2014 RDX Tech with something different

When my wife's 2014 RDX Tech was totaled in an accident we started looking for a replacement. We took our time carefully looking at luxury CUV's that interested us since we are able to share 1 car for now. We test drove the BMW X3 s2.8, Audi Q5 2.0T Premium Plus, and the Lexus NX 200t F Sport FWD.

The Germans were the most "athletic" but pricey when optioned up and they are getting close to a FMC. So they went to the bottom of the list.

We test drove the NX F-Sport and liked it. However, we thought without the F Sport package the NX was kinda average. Yes it has a huge spindle grille but it grows on you... like the power plenum grille grew on me. However, when considering price/value the 2016 RDX Advance was still top of our list. When the 2016 RDX Advance finally arrived at my dealership we test drove it. It felt familiar. Yes it has lots of great updates but yet for our situation (former RDX owner) it didn't feel new enough. I know its crazy but that just how we felt. So we went and test drove the NX F-sport again for the 2nd time and my wife finally made a choice. She went with something different... the NX F Sport.

It will be our 1st car that is not a Honda/Acura. So we'll see how that goes. I'm still an Acura enthusiast and still have my TSX. I still have hope that a sport package of some kind (A-Spec / Type S) will be offered on the TLX when it comes time to let go of my TSX.

Order placed at Westside Lexus of Houston

2015 NX 200t F Sport FWD
Eminent White
Rioja Red Interior

Congrats on the Lexus! I am pretty sure you will be happy with it. They build very solid vehicles

Nice! What are the pros and cons compared to your 14 RDX? I am actually waiting for the 16 RX to come out so that I may dump my 14 RDX

Congrats!
the NX together with RDX were on top of our list as well. Eventually we decided to go with Acura for the V6 engine and interior space.

I guess I would have done the same choice of yours if I already had a RDX.

I'm sure you will be happy with Lexus.

Hi CybrRdr, how is the steering wheel handling comparing Rdx and NX F-sport? I am also waiting to see the new 2016 RX. According to Lexus, they improved the RX handling. I don't like the numb and floaty handling sensation when I drove my friend's Lexus sedan.

Well to me the RDX and NX where similar in ride quality. Both where very quiet and absorbed bumps very well. Neither felt floaty like a living room on wheels. NX has a Drive Mode Selector so you can choose ECO, Normal, or Sport. It controls throttle response. Can't go wrong with either CUV.

We didn't consider the new RX as the new one is more in the same class as the MDX.

Yeah, I realize RX is larger. But I need a bit more cargo space than NX has. RDX would be perfect had it have the power folding mirrors feature like the Canadian version. It is a bit too wide to drive into my narrow garage opening every day. I knew 2015 RX has that auto folding freature and assume 2016 RX would have it too. That is my only issue for not getting the RDX.

We only have about 2 inches on each side of the mirrors when we go in and out of our garage. It really concerned me at first, but I'm used to it now (though I am still careful). It's difficult to see the right side clearance very well, but I know that if the left side mirror is about 2 inches from the left side of the garage opening, then the right side will be OK.

Congrats on the new purchase!

Sat in the NX at the Auto Show and I liked it but overall just wasn't feeling the cockpit like style of the interior. Other than that I walked away impressed.

She went with something different... the NX F Sport.

I actually did the same one week ago, but for much different reasons. I really liked the 2014 tech RDX but never loved it overall. I found out about the NX approx. 6 months after getting the RDX. I wanted all the now available advanced tech features which I felt the 2014 lacked, however it was the best for my price point at the time of purchase (3/2014). I did test drive the 2016 advanced tech RDX as well as the base NX with tech features and the NX F-sport before pulling the trigger on the NX F-sport.

I completely agree that although Acura took care of a lot of things that "bothered" me with the advanced model, it just didn't feel new enough. I couldn't "justify" losing $ to trade a 2014 for a 2016 (within a year and 3 months). Still kind of crazy for me to trade a perfectly good vehicle in such a short amount of time. Oh well, life is short.
The Lexus NX and Acura RDX are very nice CUV's and both have pros and cons when compared to each other. IMO though, I was completely blown away by the NX F-sport and have not had one regret after a full week of owning.
I have that "this is it, this is the one" feeling every time I see it and drive it!!

NX F-sport
Nebula grey
Missing the ventilated seats, never had so won't be missed, but would have been nice.
Missing the auto back door/hatch opener (this will be so missed, but I didn't want to wait for a shipment/special order).

Good luck with your NX! You will both LOVE it!

This sounds very familiar. I agree with you that there is very little gain in moving from a 14 RDX to 16 RDX as it's basically the same nice, quiet, V6 powered, comfortable vehicle with some extra goodies added. The NX appears to be very well suited to you from your description. Congratulations on the new car.
PS. Trading into newer cars every few years isn't the best financial move. If you like that then may be leasing is for you.

Congrats on your NX! It looks much better in person than in photos too....Like you, I am an Acura guy and hope that the TLX will eventually come with a sportier variant when I trade my IS350 FSport.

Thanks, and yes I am not one to make a "crazy" financial move like this at all. I am definitely keeping this car for a minimum of 5 years. leasing is just not for me.

My wife's Lexus NX finally arrived at the dealership and as promised here are some quick pictures of it.

Recap: This CUV replaces my wife's 2014 RDX Tech that was totaled in an accident. We decided to go with a different CUV rather than replace it with an updated 2016 RDX.

Initial Impressions: Love the Dark Painted wheels w/Summer Tires. Love the F Sport appearance package.

Looks stunning, honestly one of my favorite vehicles currently on the market. LOVE the red leather interior, my dream is to have a red leather interior some day. Also love the white, if they would make a red on red NX, I would be all over it in a heart beat. I like the current RDX, but IMHO, this takes the cake by far.

My one major gripe with the nx is that the F-Sport doesn't have real leather seats and also I think you lose the power recline rear seats as well by going F-Sport. I also wish they would have gone more aggressive with the tune (say 260-290hp) but this should prove to be more reliable and easier on the engine and driveline as a whole.

Good luck with it. The only reason that I didn't seriously consider it is that it is smaller than the RDX.
