Guys,

I have a 17 RDX. And recently, I was doing a stupid test to identify a tapping noise from passenger side A pillar by using a coin. I believe it was 5 cents coin. Accidentally, the coin slipped through the clearance at the very end of the A pillar which was the intersection area of A pillar and the dash panel.

I can hear coin rattling underneath the panel when I ran over bumps and dealer has taken A pillar cover out and found no coin. I guess it already drops though and stuck in the middle.

The rattle is really annoying. Anyone knows what would be a proper way of taking care of it or it is not worth of taking it out?

the proper way is to take off the a-pillar and search for the coin.
if you cant do that, then give up on finding it.

Turn the car over and shake it. That's what I do when I lose a screw in my computer case. It'll come out eventually.

Did you have to pay the dealer for the coin search? Incentivize them. Take it back and tell them if they find it they can keep it!

lol never thought about that. Dealer told me to drive several weeks to see if coin will find a place where does not rattle

Is there a manual of poping up the a pillar? Could not find one so far.

RDX has side curtain airbags right? Just set it off and the A pillar will come right off

I know for my car; I use a butter knife wrapped in a cloth to pop out the little SRS airbag square on the a-pillar. once that is unlocked, it'll give you access to pull outward on the trim piece itself to detach it from the clips.

Has annoying tapping noise. Puts coin in to prevent tapping noise and now gets rattling noise......hmmm.

Some vehicles have screws securing the pillars in. It’s easy to check though, the part that says “SRS AIRBAG” on the A-pillar is usually a little tab that you can pull out. If there is a screw, it will be directly under it, if there is no screw than don’t worry about it. It should be as simply as pull out from the top and the bottom will slide out. As for getting the coin out, is it magnetic? I know quarters here in Canada are magnetic...not sure about other coins. So you could try that.

Thanks for the reply. I know I messed up and it was a stupid idea. The coins in U.S are not magnetic in my opinion.
Yeah I can try to pull out the pillar cover. But, is there any chance that I will mess up with the airbag though?

If you want to be extra extra safe, disconnect the battery and then go press the brake pedal for a few seconds. This will discharge any power and prevent the airbags from going off (even though they absolutely will not). And also don’t worry, I was just playing around. It happens, I always try and “fix” things on my cars and 9.9/10 times make it worse. I’m NOT mechanically inclined even though I want to be.

LOL, like a piggy bank? I suppose the OP can keep putting nickels in until it jams up so much that there's no room to rattle.

That said, apologies to the OP. There's a lot friendly snark in this thread to keep the rest of us amused. Yeah, short of removing the A pillar trim, just drive until the coin settles. Accelerate hard, brake hard, and take corners fast -- all within the bounds of safety of course.
