Where do you live?
Where I live, there's a lot of sun. Sun = UV and heat . UV and heat = heats up interior of car. Heats up interior of car = leather/vinyl dries up . Dries up = not fun
sun = not fun.
Sun shade = fun.

There should already be enough UV protection from the all the glass. It is not 100%; but, enough to last during the normal 3-5 yrs of typical vehicle ownership depending on where you live. I did tint on the side windows and sunshade mostly for privacy and heat control living in the southwest. The steering wheel can get pretty hot in direct sunlight on a summer day in Phoenix.
You don't need anything big or fancy. Just something that can block UV and provide shade. I use the ones that fold pretty small up like an IQ test and you can store in door or behind the seat.

I don't use a sunshield. Don't believe the hype.
I've always had good results with those super extra large novelty T-shirt seat covers. Started using them on my 1986 IROC-Z (mainly because the springs poked my tender bits) but it worked so well I've gotten them for every car since.
During the peak of summer, I'll usually grab an old towel from under the bed and toss one onto the steering wheel with the towel. That keeps it subtle (sp?, I mean soft and tender feeling) and also keeps it from getting too hot.
If the knob is getting too hot to touch I'll put a glove on it. Just an old glove I found a long time ago. Nothing fancy but it works.
It may not be the most elogent solutions. But its always worked for me.

Are said towels used? Or do you use fresh towels? I feel that my towel budget is a bit tight right now. Can I use them if they're just re-washed? Also what detergent do you use to get rid of ..... Stains

Personally I like to soak my protective towels completely in aerospace 303 or leather conditioner depending on what surface I am covering up. That way, while the towels are blocking the sun they are also cleaning. One time use only.
