Texting in the RDX

Has anybody ever performed a text in their RDX? ('17 adv)
happened to me once...and once again I was shocked and surprised to have that happen...and have not been able to recreate this feature.

I texted my wife while waiting at a lane closure from my iPhone.
10 minutes later while driving I saw her reply on the dash screen and using voice and some combination of rubbing my tummy I was able to compose a reply...then kaput.
i haven't tried to figure it out until I became jelly when my buddy did it seamlessly on some kind of Ford Focus.

Arggg...The force is strong in this RDX.
kudos to those that have learned this feature.

Seriously? Texting and driving is just as bad as drinking and driving. Don’t do it. I know in my 2016 RDX Advance if I receive a text it’ll pop up a message that I received a text and who it’s from but I’m required to stop and park the vehicle to read it. Texting and driving… Bad.

You can use voice read option without stopping.

Push the round button in or maybe down when the screen shows a text or email..I don't remember as it's my wife's vehicle but one or the other to get voice read out.Takes a few seconds for voice to play.

OK, Thanks. I'll give it a try next time I receive a text in the car.

Might have to be at a stop or it was coincidence when I experienced the hands free text feature that one fleeting time.
Sure seemed like the text on the screen became audible and from that point on the feature worked similar to the on the fly voice command prompts after pressing the paddle on the steering wheel.
iirc I was able to use voice commands to edit, backspace and send while composing my text message.
I imagine that to be similar to those dictation programs.

Personally I do not even use the car's interface... I just press the talk button, the phone picks up and I tell it "text name here" phone responds "OK< what do you want to say?" and I speak out the message...

Lumia 950 with Windows Mobile 10.

I find most car interfaces are not nearly as polished as the phone's interface is.

I have the base RDX and an iPhone. Every once in a while new txts will pop up on my screen and are able to be read through the speakers and then I'm able to respond the same way. It happens so intermittently that it truly is odd. Usually they're just on my phone. I generally will just hit the voice button and txt through Siri.

I have a 2017 base & have yet to receive a text or send one. I have a iPhone 6. The guys @ the dealership stated that the iPhone 6 will not work.

it's always on - Acura knows about the texting issues with the iPhone 6 but makes no efforts for a fix

On
No messages

I'm sure you must have already tried it, but just in case, have you turned on the "show notifications" in the Bluetooth menu on your phone? This is usually turned off by default and it took a long time for me to figure it out. Don't worry, iPhone 6 works with RDX.

I do appreciate your optimism but I think I've done all there is to do for the iPhone 6.... guys @ the Acura dealer have been unsuccessful, I have called the Acura tech # & they have all but conceded the iPhone 6. The 6 sends & receives calls, will not receive texts.

Its not the iPhone6

I have a 2016 RDX Elite (Canada). My iPhone 6 integrates well with the car. The 6 canned text messages will only work with Android, and will not work with iPhone (Apple products) due to the security built into the iOS. iOS sees the canned Acura text messages as being sent by a third party (like spam) and prevents it from happening.

Simply use Siri when sending texts. Hold down the Talk button on the steering wheel for a few seconds until you see "Mute" on the car's audio display screen and hear a beep. Speak your command like you would normally do when using Siri.

I think there is a detailed thread on this somewhere here.

has nothing to do with security, has everything to do with Apple not wanting it to integrate unless their product is in the car (apple play)

Point being.....its not Acura (as some people think); its Apple! Security or otherwise.

what most people don't realize is that phones query the car and ask what can the car do?

the car will respond with things like

Audio gateway
text messaging
stereo headset
hands free device
remote SIM capable (it can control the phone)
etc.

it is up to the phone OS as to what abilities that it will use when paired to a device.

a basic primer here

more detailed pairing explanation here

With my 2016 Elite, I can receive text messages either have it display or have it read out. I can only respond in one of the six pre-recorded messages. It works Ok as long as you can live with the six messages. If I want more I will call.

My wife's 2016 Civic Touring has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can received text and respond in voice.

Actually, it is far worst and has taken over as the number one cause of collisions. Notice I did not say "accidents" since there is nothing accidental about texting and driving.
I've spent enough time in the hospital and then on crutches for five months thanks to a texting ahole.

Correct me if i'm wrong but the pressing of the 'TALK' button to send a txt only works for iOS and as above, lumia. I believe it is NOT compatible with Android phones.

Oh yes, that talk button which can program on the fly...very distracting but I thought oh so much better than having to stop the vehicle and input a destination like my friends car from Lexus.
I was wrong!..what's even worse I found was driving along and having to shout at your car visor multiple times 'first st and Chattanooga' or challenge myself and change the climate settings with voice.

The capability of voice recognition is the meat of this feature...so simple texting and commanding various vehicle functions with voice is about all it's capable of now and certainly not utilized by me and works spotty at best.

Psa: texting or doing anything behind the wheel other than driving is Bad. Don't do it.
but perhaps someday as artificial intelligence (self driving) becomes the norm we will need a method to communicate with our on board computers so for now however crude (and may never catch on) this is a start.
