Odyssey anything but bulletproof so thinking thrice about an Acura
My ‘02 Odyssey (purchasd new and well maintained) has had more than it’s share of problems and it makes me worry about a RDX. In the first three years I needed a new gas tank. In year 4 I needed a second new gas tank! In year 5 I needed a new tranny. In year 7 I needed all new engine mounts. In year 8 driver’s side power door bit the dust. In year 10 the second one followed it along with needing a new oil pan. Along the way there have been a host of smaller problems. I forget when I needed a new AC compressor. The last 5 years have been pretty reasonable.
I’m not whining about a 16 year old car with 225,000 miles! But those were a lot of major things to happen in the first 5 years. The last straw was the glove compartment falling off its hinges - it stays in place by keeping it locked.
My twins graduate from HS next week and I will have hit the milestone of when I get to replace the thing!! I’ve just started shopping and find that I have an emotional resistance to buying a Honda/Acura. Not quite as bad as my total refusal to buy a new Volvo after owning a rolling headache of a 240.
Am I unreasonable? I’ve actually owned very few cars having spent most of my adult life in Manhattan. Are the issues I outlined par for course and what I need to plan on? If so, there’s no question that I’ll buy one to unload before the warranty runs out.

Really? Because it sounds like you're whining about a car with 225,000 miles
Reliability is tough to predict. You have to compare a number of metrics to get an idea. Acura has been not great recently but you have to do your research.

If you think your van was unreliable, ho boy, you're in for rude surprise with an Acura. Especially one approaching 10 years of age, and 100k miles.

Why would anyone need 2 gas tanks in 4 years?
Every tank I've had from various manufacturers has lasted the life of the car.

I have no idea how or why a car would need 2 replacement tanks and neither did the dealer. Thank goodness both were covered since they would have cost more than $1000 each (IIRC). In both cases there was a fault where the filling tube thingie meets the body of the tank.
Maybe they didn’t replace it the first time and tried to get away with a bandaid.
