Driving 2015 RDX Without Propeller Shaft Assembly

Newbie here. 2015 RDX with 145,000kms. Propeller shaft started making the noise a couple months ago. I took the shaft right out and took it for a spin, noise is gone so it proves the bearing is bad. New shaft assembly is $3000 Cdn here with taxes. Warranty is up so that bites. I was thinking about just leaving it off for the summer months while I try to find another replacement. Just wondering if anyone else had taken theirs off until they found a replacement?

Just went out to my garage to look at my propeller shaft part number. Looks like mine is not the latest, my number is 40100TX4A020. I thought they were using the A03 part for 2015.

Well, I am no mechanic, but I would just get it repaired.

Same happened on my 1st gen CR-V. It felt as if I had thrown a wheel weight. When I got under the car I used the driveshaft to pull me in. Surprise, the U-joint had a centimeter of play in it.

Try a driveshaft / CV joint rebuilder.

Red,

I don't know if this is the case with your RDX but one end of driveshafts usually work against a seal in the transmission/transfer case and prevent lube from being lost. If one end of your driveshaft is splined then that's probably the case with your car and driving without the shaft in place would be a bad idea.

Simple solution. Since you already have the shaft off the car just buy the parts you need and take everything to a local auto shop (maybe even a high school). They should be able to press the old parts off and new ones on for a minimal fee. If it's just a U-joint you can do it yourself with a pair of needle nose pliers, a socket a little smaller than the bearing and a large hammer. Mark the drive shaft parts so they go back together paired the same way they're coming apart to keep the factory balance. Remove the circlips on all four sides then use the hammer and socket to punch everything out of the shaft assembly. The new parts go back on pretty much the same way but you don't have to hit them nearly as hard

Cheers!

Just to update my thread, I've been driving the car for over a year with no propeller shaft, no issues. I sent the shaft to a driveline shop and was told these shafts are not rebuildable. There's only 2 solutions, #1- buy new, here they are $2700 plus tax; #2- try to find a good used replacement. Been looking for a year now. They are out there but unfortunately too far away. They are a bugger to ship unfortunately due to their size.

Wouldn't it be easier for them to install grease nipples on the U-joints as a minimum or better yet, have circlips and replaceable U-joints.
$5 (if that) in manufacturing costs goes a long way.

The issue was not with the U joints. The issue is the cheap steady bearing they went with. It's not a serviceable or replaceable item.

Well it was in my 2-piece Honda CR-V driveshaft. The rear U-joint moved a centimeter when grabbed.

As for the center bearing (I take it the RDX has a 2-pieced driveshaft), why isn't it replaceable? The factory obviously puts on in. Anyway, they got you by the you know what and furthermore why does the RDX shaft cost more than 3 times as much as a CR-V driveshaft?

And that is more than it is worth. Why they don't have U-joints that can be greased.

I was wondering how this installation went. Did you experience any problems?

I haven't done it in the RDX, but my girlfriend's 2011 Rav4 head a bad driveshaft/propeller shaft. 2 shops quoted ~$2600 to repair.

We bought a new driveshaft off Rockauto for around $350 (looks like the RDX might be more expensive at around $650) and did the repair ourselves. It's a big part and sort of intimidating but it actually wasn't very difficult to replace. Only 10 bolts. You'll probably need a breaker bar to get some of the bolts loose.

The whole process only took 2-3 hours and the car has been driving great for about a year now since we did the replacement.
