Does sport mode consume more gas?
#2
yes as you cannot possibly control the engine to the same degree as the ECU can. also Sport Mode from my experience cause me to let the engine rev up for the fun factor. Optimal fuel economy = Leave it in D and keep your foot out of the throttle.

Thanks! I haven't tried sports mode yet, just broke in the engine recently. Will try it soon.

I haven't found a use for sport mode in normal driving situations. I put it into sport for towing in my MDX or driving in the mountains to hold a gear longer without all the up/down shifting killing my speed. Using the paddles in "D" seem to work best for when I need something in a hurry.

Sport mode, shift mode, sport/shift mode, manual mode, manual slush box mode, etc.... I've heard it call a lot of things. I think Acura calls it sequential Sportshift. In "D", the paddles are in shift mode. In "S", the RDX is in sport mode with paddles because you have a wider range of of rpms available for an enhance driving experience.

Could you explain to me step by step how to use the paddle shifters in D mode? Can I damage the car if I do it incorrectly?

Go in your glovebox and read about it in your manual would be the easiest solution. No you can't damage the transmission/engine using the paddles, the ECU will not allow you to shift to a gear that is deemed too low relative to your speed.

The worst thing you can do (and it doesn't cause any damage) is if you hit redline in "sport" mode and fuel cutoff is activated. The vehicle will start to sputter and buck a little bit as a friendly reminder to shift. The RDX won't do this in "D" mode using the paddle shifters. The transmission will only let you up/down shift in "D" or "S" mode only in the acceptable rpm range. "S" mode acceptable rpm range is a little lower/wider if you need more sport from the RDX. I have a reflashed ECU on my 08 RDX and my rpm redline is about 200 rpms higher at 7200 in sportshift mode only.
In auto "D" mode using the paddles you can do stuff like:
- start in 2nd gear if the road are too slick for 1st gear, like on and icy roads
- down shift on a hill and it will hold that gear and maintain current speed until you hit the gas
I use the paddles and "D" mode for:
- slow down before a curve, get the rpms up, spool my turbo faster, and engage the sh-awd to power out the curve.
- maintain my speed in the mountains going down hill instead of riding the brakes
- keep my rpms up in i-vtec range, turbo spooled, and sh-awd engaged on turns on mountain switchbacks
- tap the paddles to downshift sooner to get back to cruise control speed faster if I had to slow down because of traffic
- slow down a bit in traffic if I'm too lazy to tap the brakes
I get crappy mpgs in sport mode because I'm dogging the hell out of my RDX when I do. Having Hondata+ETS intercooler+sh-awd on my 08 RDX can make sport mode a lot fun in the mountains.

Can you expand on downshifting and going down hill? Do I just put in S mode and gas then let go of the gas pedal?
If I am in D mode and driving can I shift to S mode or do I have to stop then shift to S mode?
Thanks!

- In "D" mode using paddles, you can down or up shift if the AT allows it and will hold that gear until you press the gas pedal. Once you hit the gas, it goes back to regular AT mode. I just tap the paddle one or two times to downshift and maintain my speed without having to hit the brakes. At the bottom of the hill, just hit the gas and I'm back to regular AT mode.
- In "S" mode, you can down or up shift and the AT will hold that gear as long as the AT allows it. When you stop, the AT will down shift to 1st gear and sometimes it will shift into 2nd gear (don't know the conditions when it picks 2nd over 1st at a stop or low speeds).
It is really next to impossible to break the transmission in "D" or "S" mode using the paddles. I don't know if 16 RDX IDS settings changes how the engine/transmission responds in "D" or "S" modes. You might have to try both "D or S" modes with different IDS settings to see which one(s) feels the best for your driving conditions and experience.
